Sensational streak subsides

Sensational streak subsides

Jug-Raj Grewal

4s streak comes to an end

Well, our streak finally came to an end. It took some odds being against our favour with some interesting officiating but we lost after a long time. An incredible achievement - our last loss came the week before the reverse fixture, meaning we'd gone 12 weeks unbeaten!

Our promotion charge was considerably harmed at this point - our game the week before was the only one in our division cancelled due to waterlogging, allowing other contenders to gain more ground so there was an feeling of being hard done by the weather felt among the team. Nevertheless, this didn't hamper our attitude and drive.

As is the case during August, selection wore thin with people opting to do something called "going on holiday" to "relax and treat themselves" because it's "fun". Insane if you ask me - cricket is the holiday!

Irrational rants aside - Skip had won the toss and decided to bowl first. Bipin as he had done all season opened and found the inside edge of the bat, only for the decision to be given not out. Bipin found the outside edge soon after, which was duly given out.

One down, early wicket - all going smoothly.

Jamie H, after several weeks out, was struggling at the other end - a fair few wides allowed the batsmen to relax which is the polar opposite of what his week-in week-out game is like. Understandable after his injury woes - but was supported greatly by the boys.

The first changes bowled well but the batsmen were finding the middle of the bat and taking quick singles. Skip licked his lips at the challenge of batsmen coming at the field - one came to him at mid off and he struck the non-strikers end with a powerful direct hit, prompting celebrations from the fielding team! The umpire gave it not out however, leaving the field enraged and upset.

Such assistance allowed the batsman to reach 70, before he was C&B by Skip who also removed the number 3 with a 45 degree off spinner to hit the off stump.

Bipin came back to clean up a few more wickets as he had done all season - there was finally a run out given but by then the damage had been done. Some redemption, but the oppo had got to 241-7. We left the field feeling hard done by.

Our brave 13 year old, Bilal Hassan opened the batting with our experienced Vice Captain Kam. A typically hostile and excitable outfield didn't faze Bilal, who blocked out plenty with great conviction. He was later bowled, but displayed fantastic resolve and drove well.

In came our Wall, JP who grinded out for a respectable 30. Skip was doing well until being bowled by a yorker. JK came in and immediately got at the bowlers and looked really promising until skying one.

Bipin then entered and hit well - ending up on 21 not out and looked in fine nick.

Unfortunately we lacked the batting firepower to put up a chase and could only get just past the halfway mark with 126.
