3s get act together after dodgy start

Stars of the show, well there were two - Simon Durban, looking tanned and relaxed after a well-deserved break in Spain, and Felix Hart, looking rather less tanned but just as relaxed. Simon hit a superb 72 (7 x 4) on a difficult track which, with its indifferent bounce, saw us struggling against a youthful attack with 32 for 4 and 47 for 5 the low points. The two combined with the bat in a partnership of 75 (Felix 20) to get us up to respectability, and with double figure contributions from Eddie, Neil and Rishab, we were reasonably confident that our bowlers could do the job. For Felix's day job, see below.

The LG opening bowler who took a five-for donned the pads and, with a flurry of big hits, looked like a man who had a train to catch .. turns out, he did, but after Steve had nipped out the other opener, well caught by Simon (that man again) at slip, he fell to the same combo with SD taking a high loopy one. Felix took out 3 and 4 with full, fast and straight balls, and at 4 down we were looking good, even if the sun had dried out the pitch somewhat. A recovery followed with more orthodox batting until Neil demonstrated his third discipline - catching - with a superb overhead effort at deepish mid-wicket when he had almost overrun the ball - catches surely do win matches. Eklavya was the bowler who benefitted, and he deserved some good fortune after a series of nicks fell short and some very, very strong LBW shouts were turned down.

Neil also tired of beating the outside edge and cleaned up no.7, then another mini-recovery took LG into 3 figures until Felix's second spell again saw him castle two more batsmen; he finished with the fabulous figures of four for 11 from 9. A calculated decision to concentrate on the four main bowlers paid off but Abhinay made a telling contribution when, in between some interesting shorter balls, he bowled full and straight enough to bowl no.9 and have no.10 lbw, leaving the young woman no.11 not out.

Back in the winning routine - have those cancellations put paid to our promotion hopes? We still lie 4th and can only beat what's in front of us.
