Match report Totteridge Millhillians Ladies First IX v Hampstead Ladies 1 XI
TMCC 128-7 (25 overs)
HCC 115-6 (25 overs)

On a beautiful sunny day, where the birds (of the non-cricketing variety) were chirping and the hang over of James Hutch was settling nicely, TMCC ladies prepared to face their nemesis – Hampstead Ladies first IX. We all remembered oh too well, of how we toiled hard under the hot sun this time last year on Hampstead’s home ground to no avail as all our bowling was responded to by a steely straight bat from HCC’s resident county player. This year it would be different (namely because said player was on holiday, as funded for by an unnamed donor).

TMCC lost the toss, but the opposition chose to field, a decision greatly favoured by the home side. Pat and Ros, a familiar opening partnership took to the crease. Sadly Pat and Ros were split when Pat fell to the sixth ball of the game. Aileen took to the crease at number three and so ensued the highest partnership of the innings, achieved from disciplined but passionate batting, taking our score up to 66 by the 11th over. The relationship was cruelly split by a tempting ball that pushed Ros onto her back foot with her shot in the air caught. Julie (AKA KP’s female encarnation) stepped up in number 4, but unfortunately like the man himself went out for a golden duck with a catch from gully. Just two overs later, Aileen who had demonstrated fantastic skill with the bat fell to a clean bowl and hence the future of the innings lay to rest on our youngest player, Tolly’s and the skippers shoulders, the former being responsible for a booming straight four down the ground. The wickets stabilised for six overs, until Zoe - not realising and still eager to carry on - was given an LBW. This made way for Tolly’s mum to come in make it a family affair which is always quite interesting. The partnership started off harmoniously, with a quick lesson from Tolly on how to hold the bat and an agreement to take the risky runs as the overs were coming to an end and extra runs are always a bit useful in a cricket match. This agreement was quickly forgotten as Caz thundered towards Tolly only to be given the hand. After Caz grounded Tolly for a year she managed to return safely to her crease only to be bowled two balls later. Hannah came in at number 8, fresh off Malibu beach, to defend the last two balls and give the TMCC ladies a healthy total of 128.

A quick drink and a pep talk from skippy the kangaroo had the ladies stepping out onto the field desperate for a win. Tolly’s mum opened the bowling from the ‘scaffolding’ end, an interesting decision that surprised the captain as Tolly’s mum NEVER bowls from the scaffolding end. The scaffolding got to Caz and we decided to return her to her normal end in a couple of overs time. Ali began her 2009 bowling campaign with an early wicket as Julie our super, bendy matrix style wicket keeper snapped the ball in her gloves (it should be mentioned here that despite this superb piece of bowler-keeper unity, neither players appealed for the wicket and it took a shout from Ros at point to highlight this to the umpire – typical when we normally appeal every time the batsmen breathes). It didn’t take long for the next wicket to fall as just three overs later, Aileen bowled batsmen number three for a duck. Following this a slow accumulation of runs trickled out from the Hampstead ladies opener who was looking far too confident for our liking. Skippy stepped in to bridge between bowlers and clean bowled the oppos American skipper with her sixth ball. Unfortunately, the next over was not so consistent and off spin Ros replaced her at the scaffolding end. Meanwhile, Tolly’s mum returned from her preferred tree end and the magic of 2008 TMCC player of the year returned when she clean bowled number four. However, as we worked through HCC’s batting order in the tenth over we arrived at number 6, a strong built lady who favoured the leg and was determined to put any stray balls right there and over the boundary. Tolly did a fantastic effort keeping the ball from entering the bar for a drink and Pat, Hannah and Kez kept the bushes safe. Ros bowled a tight spell, with a near wicket that was just too slippery for the VC’s hands. Kezza, despite a belly of nerves, bowled a healthy three overs, to lead us into the twenty second over, when Ali returned to her position of attack. By this point, the excitement was becoming too much to bear and the pressure was immense. HCC ladies were 100-4, looking strong with sturdy built lady packing all her balls off to the leg side. Ali bowled a tight spell only conceding one run and a nervous wide. The 23rd over was taken by Aileen, four runs went, taking the total to 107. Ali came back in the opposite end, first ball went for one, strong girl faced second ball sent it for four, third ball and WICKET!! The relief was like the end of a rollercoaster ride. Ali kept calm and saw out the rest of the over conceding just one more run. Six balls remained and HCC needed a still achievable 16 to win. All hopes of TMCC ladies fell back to Aileen who bowled the following over – dot, WICKET, dot, 2, dot, dot. A brief spell of silence followed until the Chairman (who happened to be umpiring) declared ‘and that’s over’, when a shriek erupted from fine leg and the joy of remaining unbeaten sunk it. A fantastic day, a fantastic team and a fantastic demonstration of what a bunch of determined ladies can achieve. Special mention should be made to Aileen and Ali who kept their heads at a very crucial part of the game and had they lost them the outcome may have been quite different.
