Totteridge Millhillians Cricket Club 1st XI v West Herts on Sun 14 Jun 2009 at 13:00
Totteridge Millhillians Cricket Club Won by 7 wickets

Match report TM's cup run got underway this week, after a postponement last week meant all manner of reorganisation to accommodate the extra game. We started the colts game early and moved the Ladies game to a nearby ground. As it turned out, both the Ladies and the colts could probably have played their game after ours finished, done and dusted as it was within a combined 34 overs.

Shaun lost the toss (again) and would have chosen to bat, but a slow, low, green wicket made things difficult for the visitors from the division - and indeed the league - above.

West Herts had clearly brought a reasonably good team, with several batsmen looking capable. But Hassan struck early, the Herts opener getting through his shot with time to have a cup of tea before the ball clipped the bails. The other opener began to assert himself, but wickets began to fall regularly, with the skipper bowling the 3 and Hassan getting the number 4 caught behind. Shaun then took an important wicket, clipping the shoulder of the opener's bat, for Kriss to take a great low catch.

And from there, it was really a case of the sublime and the ridiculous. Herts' kiwi pro looked a cut above but seemed, in all fairness, disinterested. That didn't stop him depositing Chris Mason for two gigantic sixes, and having quickly added 30 he looked capable of standing in the way of a steam-rollering. But a well thought-out full toss on leg stump brought a slight miscue, and the batsmen only succeeded in picking out Luke Deutschmann for a brilliant catch in the deep. Clever stuff indeed. Of the other dismissals, two stand out, both in the 'ridiculous leaves' category - the first for Peter Such, the number 7 padding up on the back foot to one that turned in, and the second for Mase, with the number 8 playing probably the classiest looking leave of the season, only to trudge off after losing his middle stump.

So we turned around quickly and set about the relatively simple task - and relatively simple it turned out to be, all of Mason, Aleem and Shaun getting after the Herts bowlers, and Aniket and Luke finished things in style, giving an unexpectedly easy victory within 13 overs.

Round 2 is on July 5th, away to either Northchurch or Sawbridgeworth.
