The tale of two halves…..
After being presented with a pitch that was hard to tell from the outfield and winning the toss the opposition were duly inserted with the fun ready to begin.
Ollie Ridout’s first ball was a snorter leaping off of a length putting the shivers up the opening bat. Jasim Farhaj at the other end proved to be a menace too taking up from where he left off last week and he quickly earned himself a caught and bowled. He was unlucky to have another put down behind, one of those you see heading down first slips throat just as the outstretched hand of the keeper appears in frame. Jasim and Ollie finished their opening spells with more than useful figures of 8-3-16-1 and 7-2-13-0. Sam Moore returning to the 4s decided that he was going to only deal in double-Us and sent down a challenging mix of wides or jaffas. His first wicket was collected slightly fortuitously off the back of the bat as the remaining opener mistimed a short one scooping it round to Waqas at first slip for the simplest of his three catches in that position. Sanjay “Travlota” Patnaik was on at the other end and immediately settled into an excellent rhythm despite being heavily sledged by his skipper at mid-off. Travolta picked up his first of three with one popping off a length with the resulting leading edge taken well at cover by Kamlesh. Scoring was hard going for Old Owens with the long outfield holding up any ball played on the floor. This was no bother for the heavily bottom handed number four who after the drinks break decided to go on the attack to Sam’s short pitched assault and biffed a six followed by four through deep midwicket. The usual chorus of “let’s have a come back Sammy” ensued and for once this worked a treat with the next delivery pitched up with a bit of extra pace and vicious late outswing taking the outside edge with Wasqas taking a blinder at slip falling forward to get his fingers under the ball. The batsman sensing a Billy Doctrove umpiring stood his ground but without the assistance of a television umpire it was established the ball had definitely carried to slip. Sam finished his spell with decent figures of 8-0-37-2. At this point in proceedings the skipper normally calls for a spell of controlled offspin from the ever-reliable Waqas. Instead I was talked into letting Mason (Paul not Chris) have a spell as his entire two game season was drawing to a premature close. His figures of 6.4-1-13-4 only tell half the story as two of those wickets were off rancid half-trackers normally associated with the legspin of Benn, Webby and Milo did the honours holding on as the rest of us fell about laughing. Credit where credit is due as the other two were decent wickets; Robbie taking an excellent catch behind the stumps from one that lifted considerable and the last man out was one of the plumbest LBWs you’ll see. Although Mason was doing his best to steal Sanjay’s thunder he managed to pick up another couple, one a brilliant catch by Waqas at first slip and the other being a skier caught at 45 by Sam off a batsman who was determined to smite one into the sun on a pitch not really suited to that approach. We had them skittled for an even hundred with 9 of the 10 bats caught representing an excellent day in the field for the 4s. Despite the sun drying out the pitch someway there were clearly demons to be negotiated.
Instead of negotiating the demons we invited them in for a cup of tea and a crumpet. The opposition opened the bowling with a tattooed, pierced individual affectionately known as “Caveman” by his teammates. A big unit who hit the deck hard he was always going to do well on a pitch offering this much assistance. Mason chopped on in the fifth over (the first of 4 that were dragged on) and he was quickly followed by Webby who walked after gloving one down the legside to considerable appreciation for his sportsmanship by the opposition. Waqas having been cruelly denied a bowl on account of Mason’s haul came in a number three and was our standout performer with the bat toughing out the early part of his innings that included wearing a nasty one in his breadbasket (proper rather than the euphemism) from Captain Caveman. Kamlesh was the only other batsman who offered any real resistance on a pitch that as they say, “you are never really in on”. When he fell trapped in front the rest of us fell like flies lacking the brains to apply ourselves to the situation at hand. Miles was a tad unlucky to drag on from way outside the offstump and the less said about Sanjay’s mow the better. Waqas then fell for a brilliant 30 in the first over of Caveman’s second spell dragging on, Chris then, yup, dragged on to one which he will to his dying day maintain kept low. Robbie McDougal then committed Hari-Kari by snicking an attempted topspin forehand to a bouncer that was destined to be wided on height. Ollie was caught behind soon after, the fifth of Caveman’s wickets. Sam and Jasim gave us a modicum of hope by surviving for a further few overs but alas it was not to be when Sam slid one of the face of the bat to gully. All out for 82 and whilst the pitch played it’s part – 20 wickets for 182 runs and only 4 players from either side into double figures – too many of us did not dig in when it was needed.
