Match Drawn
The battle this Saturday was always going to be against the rain which was predicated to arrive late afternoon. So the plan had to be stick the oppo in and try and get them out for a low total, nick some of their overs so we could knock them off before the showers arrived. I say the plan….
Jasim Farhaj debuting (there seems to be someone debuting every week for the 4s) for the 4s quickly worked up a head of steam beating the edge regularly. Roger Luck at the other end quickly worked up a head of sweat utilising the overcast conditions swinging the ball this way and that. Roger saw off one of the openers when he dragged on trying to cut one that was too close to his body. Then came the moment of controversy (the 4s only really do polite controversy anyway) for the match as Jasim appealed and was awarded a leg before decision by KP’s young umpire. It was clear to most concerned that there had been a rather large inside edge before the ball cannoned into the pad and so after a quick consultation with his team (ayes to the left 10 nays to the right 1) the opener was called back with Chris praying that he didn’t score a big one. There was no need to worry on that front as Roger took an excellent caught and bowled soon after and then took a third wicket with Neil taking the catch at gully. With this drama happening at one end Jasim was grinding out one of the more unlucky spells of quick bowling the 4s have witnessed this season with his pace first finding the edge low through the slips then low in and out of the keepers gloves. Waqas replaced Jasim and was rewarded with a bowled, Chris replaced Roger who’d bowled beautifully for his three wickets (12-2-34-3) and quickly took a wicket with (even by his lofty standards) an absolute piece of filth, banging in a leg break halfway down the track almost missing the return catch being so surprised that it hadn’t been deposited onto the A1. Waqas added his second wicket and the plan seemed to be coming together nicely with KPs rocking at around 80-6. Unfortunately the opposition skipper and the young no.8 dug in and put together the partnership of the innings. We created chances with an edge flying between the keeper and slip and some airy shots just missing the fielders or put down but ultimately this pair was allowed to build a large partnership. The skipper started to play a few shots as we entered the last ten and it was (perhaps) a clever piece of bowling by Waqas that saw him stumped by Robbie Mac off a wide. Jasim bowled another lovely spell at the death and finished with economical figures of (15-1-36-0) but certainly he deserved a wicket. Waqas finished with figures of 19-4-63-3 and the Skipper finished with 1 for a few.
With 191 to get before the rain set in Messrs Mike “Webby” Webb and Paul “Mason” Mason set about the chase with aplomb aided by the drizzle that was now making the ball particularly tricky to handle. Mason combined a mixture of 90% perfect straight off drives and 10% try your luck hoicks and enjoyed a number of lives on his way to a sprightly 26 before taking one chance too many caught trying to pummel one over mid-on. Webby his partner was playing with un-Webby like aggression and was racing along in boundaries. As per any boozy test match the biggest cheer of the day was saved for the ball missing the keeper and hitting the helmet followed by the utter lack of umpiring knowledge of how to signal the five penalty runs. KPs attack was inexperienced and armed with a bar of soap for a ball were not able to exert any kind of control over the run chase. However, if there is one thing that Webby can’t stand it’s a young fella trying really hard for little reward and so as soon as he passed 50 he apologetically shouldered arms to straight one. He claimed a loss of concentration but this is Webby after all who’d probably walk so long as the delivery deserved a nick; it was superbly batted. Ketan had joined Mike following Mason’s dismissal had played with excellent application employing his trademark lofted straight drive to their young leg spinner who was really struggling with the wet ball. He’d moved to 25 when an ill judged forward defensive let one through the gate. Sanjay and Joseph Calteria were charged with continuing the good work of the first three but then the rain came leaving our chase stranded on 117-3 and with that another “sure thing” of a victory was washed away with the early August downpour.
