Forget Cardiff, Enfield was the scene of the great escape this weekend after the 4s contrived to get themselves into and then (just) out of a right old pickle.
With the rain still hanging in the air on winning the toss TMs invited HT to have a bat remembering their propensity for an implosion from the previous season. Jeremy Graves and Roger Luck shared the new ball and despite Roger doing a passable impression of an ice skater having lost/forgotten his spikes he managed to pick up one of the openers with Robbie McDougal taking an excellent sharp catch standing up to the stumps. HTs skipper at the other end looked handy enough and between he and the number 3 boundaries were found with alarming regularity. It took an absolute peach of a delivery from Jeremy (10-2-33-1) moving off the seam, beating the forward defensive and taking out the off pole to remove the skipper. Dave Espisito (4-0-13-1) came on for Roger (5-0-30-1) who was severely hampered by his shoe situation as the pitch continued to be drizzled on. Working up a good head of steam he picked up the number 4 LBW with a full quick one. Somewhere during this the 4s fell seriously behind the over rate and so to catch up contrasting spin (economical and er, other) was brought on at both ends. Number 3 who had moved on to an unbeaten 50 lashing any width to the rope then fell hitting a rank long hop off Chris straight to Neil Dennison at mid-wicket. This was the critical wicket and allowed the 4s to put the brakes on the runs and Waqas quickly found his grove bowling lovely flighty delivers teasing the batsman to have a go. Chris’ bits and bobs picked up a bowled before Waqas joined the party with three quick wickets an LBW, a caught at mid-off and an excellent low catch by Robbie. Waqas finished with figures of 13-5-18-3. With the tail well and truly in the Skipper (13-1-66-4) wrapped up HTs innings with Robbie capping an excellent day behind the pegs stumping the number 9 before the number 11 fell trying to go over the top.
171 to win then on a pitch that continued to receive light rain throughout the day and really was beginning to look like something of a minefield. Fresh from his half-century HTs number 3 was handed the old ball and proceeded to reek absolute havoc through TMs top order. Variable bounce was the enemy as Sharukh (promoted up the order so he could get off for a social function) miscued a pull shot ballooning one to mid-wicket. Kamlesh fell soon after plum in front and with Mike and Sanjay following soon after to deliveries that popped off a good length all hell was breaking loose. 20-4 soon became 27-5 as Neil could only manage a brief stay before becoming the next victim. Dave offered some aggressive resistance making a swift 20 but was then bowled with more variable bounce on show. With the score at 49-6 Jeremy at number 7 was the joined at the crease by skipper Chris at number 8 with the conversation revolving around keeping things dignified. Straight batting was the order of the day with the bounce so unpredictable and slowly but surely a partnership began to build. Quick singles were taken, especially to the older members of HTs (the oldest being the famous 70 year old bowler Siggy) and when a loose delivery appeared it was punished appropriately. The opening bowler who had decimated the top order was replaced as the new ball was taken but this experiment did not last long as Jeremy piled into anything slightly over pitched. With Siggy the scourge of the 4s last season proving ineffective HTs started began to scratch their heads about ways to break the partnership. With the score around 120 a single over was then pummelled for 16 and the fielding sides heads started to drop. There was one last wicket of Chris for 45 to the opening spinner who finished with marvellous figures of 18-4-46-7 but that was as good as it got with Waqas making a quick fire 12 to snaffle out any notions of a dramatic finish for the home side. Jeremy finished an a match winning 54 not out and the 4s had pulled off the great escape.
