Match Won
Faced with a slightly green but hard pitch and having consulted with senior and junior players alike the only conclusion that captain Chris came to was that he fancied losing the toss to avoid the decision making process altogether. So for the first time in three weeks he won the toss and inserted the opposition on the strength of their skipper’s fateful recollection that they were all out for 80 last week (at the time I thought this might have been an elaborate ruse assuming [rightly] I don’t look like the sort of person who studies the results table. However, on reflection I can fully believe they were skittled for this total).
On hearing the oppositions openers having an argument about who had to face first ball the 4s hearts rose; Ollie was partnered in his new ball spell by Roger Luck with the mixture of pace at one end and swing at the other proving to be a winning combination. Ollie picked up the first wicket quickly although it was a curious one to say the least. The ball before a genuine edge flew to second slip who got hands to it but couldn’t cling on. Clearly this unsettled the batsman and so next ball he was hit on the thigh with the ball popping up hitting the back of his bat as he followed through with the shot and holding up in the air long enough for Kris Waters to gather down the leg side. Trez bizarre but gladly taken by the 4s. Roger then began to weave his spell moving the ball in and out never letting either batsman settle. After sending in a few in-duckers he informed the skipper at mid-off the next one was going the other way and true to his word he drew the bat into dabbing the away swinger straight to Neil at gully. Ollie finished an excellent opening burst with figures of 7-1-19-1. Jeremy Graves came on for Ollie and was immediately greeted with a bowler killer of a shot from the oppo skipper, technically a chance but in reality get out the way and check all your bits are in the right place. With the opposition captain beginning to look a touch dangerous Roger cleverly duped him into sweeping across the line bowling him with another class piece of swing and finishing his spell with 12-1-38-2. The bowling so far had been of a high standard and Waqas Memon coming on for Roger continued this theme. Not afraid to toss it up Waqas quickly caught and bowled the other opener and bowled a further two deceiving them in the flight. With this carnage going on at one end Jeremy was toiling away at the other with accurate hostile pitched up delivers that brought him three wickets all bowled (13-2-34-3). Add to this a Kris stumping to give Waqas his fourth (conceding a huge three runs in the process and ending with remarkable figures of 7-5-3-4) the 4s left the field extremely satisfied to have demolished the opposition for 98.
So with a low total to chase the only thing to avoid is letting the opposition think they’ve got a sniff. Two wickets within the first three overs did just that but the 4s found the a rock at number 3 in the form of Ridout Senior who demonstrated exactly how to pick off runs without giving a hint of a chance. Phil was partnered by Sanjay who wouldn’t recognise a chanceless innings if it came up and bit him on the, ahem. Nevertheless, we wouldn’t change him even if we could so with Phil at one end nudging and nurdling and Sanjay cracking the boundaries the 4s progressed serenely towards the 99 needed for an early beer. The opposition sensing that an upset was not on the cards spread the bowling round with no success until the score was 94-2. At this point their skipper had brought himself on and finding Phil entirely unwilling to do anything stupid to his teasing off-breaks let go of an absolute moon-ball; Phil slightly startled by this new tack advanced keeping his eyes on the soaring ball but managed to miss it completely and could only turn in time to see the ball literally rolling into the mitts of the keeper who whipped the bails off. A comical end to an excellent knock that had completely sucked the wind out of the opposition. Neil, the anti-Phil decided with 5 runs to get there was only one way to go and very nearly lost his off pole with an ugly swipe first ball. Very sensibly a few singles were taken to level the scores before Neil got his wish smiting one over the bowlers head to the fence finishing things off just past the 20 over mark. Sanjay batted magnificently for his 44 not out.
