Obviously there are no such things as sure things neither in cricket nor in life, but we were unequivocally, undeniably, 100% robbed by a monsoon downpour this Saturday gone! Well maybe not, but things were looking good for the 4s when the circling storm finally brought proceedings to a premature close 20 overs into the second innings.

With the midday sun (at 1.30) beating down on Rowley Lane it was some surprise that TMs were inserted to bat having lost the toss. However the opposition’s faith in their bowling attack proved well founded and had it not been for Sharukh Navaee staring with the bat (and then producing a reasonable spell of bowling!) it might have a whole lot worse. The opening bowler, who by their own admission had been playing a significant amount of first team cricket was quick, hostile and moved the bowl both ways off the normally placid RL track. It was however the skipper at the other end who was the beneficiary of the early pressure accounting for Kamlesh (LBW, the first of many) and Jeremy (bowled). In addition to this start TMs needlessly gifted a run out with Kris Waters’ huge dive to the crease not enough to see him safe. Sanjay steadied the ship with a good well-paced knock of 34. He was there long enough to see Neil caught at slip and Chris given out plum bringing Sharukh in a number 7. Sharukh never one to give the impression he is going to play a patient knock took his stance akin to a baseball player and proceeded to “go big” including off-driven six over extra-cover’s head. Sanjay who’d been playing very nicely got out the ball after finding a boundary, LBW to one that kept low. Brijee Vala in a throw back to less a professional times demonstrated that spending your final months at university boozing rather than netting is the way forward as he hit a brisk 21 before being controversially given (by our man) out in front. Even without the benefit of the 2000 frame per second camera it was fairly apparent to all bar the man who counted that bat certainly came first (apologies were offered later). Steve generously offered himself as the opposition skipper’s fifth wicket bringing my brother Matt to the crease at number 11. By finishing with 0 and the all important not out he considers himself to be Steve to my Mark and who could argue. Sharukh last man out for 47 trying to launch one to many and chopping on; a fine knock and only part I of his contribution as man of the match.

The 4s in the last few games have been kittens in the field but this week we were tigers stopping any form of momentum building and backing up the fine bowling of Steve and Sharukh. TMs looked to have the breakthrough as one opener seemed to have directed a Steve outswinger to Ketan at first. The bat stood his ground and the umpire said no dice (though adding later he thought he’d hit it?). Ketan, never a man to sit on the fence offered his opinions to batsman who offered a few back and some of us were glad for a break in the tension as we took our delayed tea. Back out after something to eat the breakthrough came when Mr. Navaee fired one off the pads of the opener into his stumps confusing a number of nameless fielders into appealing for leg before (and being thoroughly bemused as to why the batsman had given himself out having been previously disinclined to leave the crease). Sharukh being a dentist is a man who takes delight in causing people unnecessary pain and so it was as he sent the incoming bat on his bike first ball and then failed completely to use the ring of vultures to secure his hatrick preferring to keep it simple – full and straight into the pads. The opposition umpire gave two LBW appeals (rightly so although we all know this would not always be the case), to give TMs 4s their first hatrick hero. So, if over of the day undisputedly belonged to Sharukh it would be fair to award ball of the day (or three balls of the day if you include setting the trap) to Mr. Chairman who – bowling off three paces such was the soreness in his knee – sent two away swingers down before ripping a cutter back into off stump as the batsman played an elaborate leave. With good grace he walked off with a knowing smile. You suspect a team does not have a huge amount of batting to come when you see the bowlers coming in before other guys who have spent the afternoon fielding and so as the heavy rain began to fall we trudged off the field disappointed in the knowledge that we had a good chance to take the 3-0. In spite of this, it was a top bowling display from Sharukh 10-4-25-4 and Steve 10-2-21-1 and backed up with aggressive fielding from all and keeping by Kris, we’d limited them to 51-5 off 20 overs but that was the last action any of us saw, cricketwise at least.
