A slip catch, a slip catch, my kingdom for a slip catch!
Well there goes the kingdom as a slip catch was duly taken by Ketan Shah off Mr Chairman, so there’s a first. Not a regulation away swinger, rather, the one where you go a bit wider and angle it in, and it’s too close to cut, especially as it bounces a bit, so the batter only succeeds in steering it to first slip. Marvellous, and forgive me for going on about it, but it is the first 4s slip catch all season. To say that Ket only caught it as it was heading for his mashed up cheekbone would be churlish, so I won’t.
Patterns have emerged in the efforts of Chris’s Division 8 warriors, and they duly reared their ugly heads in a park in Amersham, which the geographers amongst us will know is not in Hertfordshire at all. To get there necessitated a stressful crawl on the M25, then a fabulously navigated career through the back roads of Watford/Rickmansworth/Chesham as managed by the skipper, consulting an old-fashioned road atlas. Top work Mr Benn.
Today’s pattern was the one where we take loads of early wickets, then fail to finish ‘em off, by virtue of dropping catches and allowing them far too many runs. This would be unfair on the work of Ollie Ridout, who bowled fast and well to take 4-64, and whose first 7 over spell yielded 3 wickets, and together with a great direct hit runout by Titanic Patnaik, and the above slip catch, reduced the CCs to 40 for 5. But there you go. Neil Dennison, for his ground fielding, and Titanic must indeed be exempt from the criticism levelled at the fielding effort. Titanic clung on to the three chances that came his way, one with his knees; fair play to the CC’s skipper who walked, when yet again a 4’s umpire said ‘I didn’t see it’.
Then the partnership that swung the match swung into action. Little carved and cut when given width, despite looking all at sea against the well-pitched-up swinging ball. Not delivering enough of same enabled him to flay 18 fours, no kidding, as he got up to 86. Large played out a couple of maidens while assessing the pitch, then used his reach to drive cleanly for 39. Another flurry of wickets after separating the two L’s only brought Messrs Ten and Jack together at 189-9, and somehow they added 60 before Mr C cleaned up the young no. 10 with an inswinging yorker. He was a left-hander.
Strike bowler and captain Chris took 3-54, Ollie 4-64 from 14, Steve 2-74 from 17.4, and Sanjay chipped in with the runout (direct hit with one stump to aim at), but 249 was generous in the extreme.
Jeremy Book’s stylish 53 including 3 sixes was the highlight of our batting effort, while Robbie Mac again batted in a mature fashion for 27, a score matched by the skipper whose next task will be to break out of the 20s/30s and make a big score as befits his application. Mike and Sanjay both contributed 23 in contrasting styles. Realising that the win was just about on and that plenty of points could be gained, the 4s carried on playing their shots right to the end. CC bought some wickets with a leggie tossing it right up, a valid tactic with runs in the bank. Robbie coined a new phrase that has some appeal – ‘a winning loss’ – but the fact is that a loss is a loss is a loss. That makes three on t’bounce now, so acts have to be got together, the right areas have to be hit, and doors have to be early if the Cliché Cup is to be entered into in earnest.
We lost, if you hadn’t worked it out. Never let it be said that my match reports were over-factual.
Never mind, Kraftwerk are appearing at the Manchester Velodrome on 2 July. Boing Boom Tschak!
