Perhaps it was Sanjay’s dressing room rendition of a Bollywood classic about a brown paper bag(?!?) or perhaps it was the lack of a 200mph wind lashing rain across Rowley Lane but the 4s took the field with vigour and purpose with Ollie Ridout and Mr. Chairman adopting their chalk and cheese approach to bowling to good effect (as we have come to expect). The RL pitch being good and true wickets did not materialise early on but the opposition were limited to scoring the occasional drop off the hip or flail over cover’s head. Early pressure on the run rate led to the breakthrough with Bushey’s opener departing for a well made 31 caught behind by Robbie Mac-D off Steve (the first of three caught behinds for the vertically challenged WK). The first wicket quickly led to the second and probably the strangest dismissal of the day as Steve bowled the no.3 round the back of his legs as he went for a stroll towards point for some curious reason. After Ollie’s probing opening spell ended (7-3-24-0) Mark Dearing took up the mantle and once he established a comfortable line and length had the other opener caught behind. Mark followed this up with what appeared to be a fizzing in-drifting off-break although the bowler was at pains to emphasise he had absolutely no idea what he was bowling by this point. Mark (11-1-42-2) took a breather and the captain brought himself on for a spell that resulted in four wickets. The first two of these wickets had the batsman leaving the crease with the kind of expression normally associated with discovering their girlfriends have run off with their best mate after being served up absolute buffet 4 balls and succeeding only to chip them straight to fielders; Andy and Neil respectively who duly obliged (demonstrating much improved catching all round for the 4s). Andy Budd came on for Steve and bowled a nice spell at a tough time in the innings and continues to look like a promising acquisition for the 4s. Steve then returned and picked up a lovely bowled flicking the top of off with an outswinger. Chris took a sharp caught and bowled chance (catching always much improved off ones own bowling). The 9th wicket partnership proved frustrating adding a further 40 runs before the penultimate ball of the innings brought Chris his fourth (at the time believing that he had cunningly eked a dubious LBW out of umpire Bill Banks through a veracious appeal but subsequently was informed over tea that Robbie had caught a deflection behind). One ball of the 53 overs remained to obtain the much coveted five-for so no surprises when the no.11 dispatched a rank full toss over cow for four. Steve again showed himself to be the pick of the 4s bowlers (21-4-58-3) and despite the largish total conceded a really good effort fielding by all involved.
The 4s began their response to the run chase in much the same way as last weeks with Mike Pratt blazing away ably supported by Kamlesh Bharadia. The first wicket partnership put up 60 on the board before Kamlesh (19) fell victim to a quick straight one by the pick of the Bushey bowlers (17-1-60-4). Mike was cleaned up by the same bowler shortly after for 34 bringing Jeremy Book and Sanjay Patnaik together. Fours were coming thick and fast at this point and TMs were up with the rate. Jezza who was dealing almost exclusively in boundaries (the signature back foot drive much in evidence again) was unfortunate when he dispatched a fabulous cover drive straight to the fielder. It was one of those shots where as a batsman (I’m told) you feel cheated not to have got four runs for timing the pants of the ball and so in an effort to achieve some form of justice you set off for a single that’s the very least you deserve. The unfortunate aspect of this was that Sanjay at the other end disagreed and stood perfectly still forcing Jeremy into an about face halfway down the pitch with the obvious fatal consequences following. Neil Dennison joined Sanjay in the middle and having witnessed the running shenanigans gone before (and perhaps with a long enough memory to remember last week) singles that could have been taken were categorically turned down. Sanjay (37) then somehow became the victim of one of the slowest stumping I’ve witnessed hovering in the air for a good three seconds and with this the run chase lost the impetus to stick with the required rate. The captain and Neil ran hard for five overs or so before the skipper was outclassed by an inswinging yorker. Robbie joined Neil and at this stage the task was to get full batting points. With three overs left Rob and Neil went about their task with some aplomb, Neil striking some lusty blows in his excellent 37. Robbie finished on 15no with a couple of text book forward defensives having got the 4s to 201 with two balls to spare.
A good performance from the 4s, just a few too many runs leaked and a few untimely dismissals prevented a better result on the day. Many thanks to Bill for umpiring on day.
