A glorious day, a glorious pitch, a glorious run chase and a glorious 3-0 for the 4s.
As can be seen from the total runs scored in this fixture the pitch and outfield at Ickleford’s ground were batsman friendly to say the least. Although showing a slight tinge of green all reports and statistics pointed to this being a 200+ track. However, in an apparent masterstroke (on the grounds that we eventually won) of reverse psychology had the 4s skipper inserted Ickleford after winning the toss (it could’ve been so Punter, Edgebaston, 05). And so at one end it was Mr. Chairman’s cunning complimented at the other by Ollie Ridout’s (10-1-38-1) energy and pace. Both performed admirably in their respective opening spells Ollie getting the first breakthrough with a caught behind; Kris doing the honours reinserted behind the pegs on his return to the 4s. Steve quickly picked up the second wicket however this prompted to the remaining left handed opener to begin chancing his arm. Although riding his luck considerably (being dropped, the first of too many that went down), he forged a productive partnership with Ickleford’s skipper moving the score along fairly rapidly. With the 4s beginning to scratch their collective heads about where the next wicket was coming from Neil D produced a piece of magical fielding diving from point to collect a firmly struck cut shot with one hand and showing great presence of mind to fire the ball into the bowlers end where Sam did the rest. With the pitch being as true as it was containment was as important as wickets and this was duly provided by Sanjay on for Sam and Steve returning for his second spell replacing Andy Budd. Sanjay (11-0-52-2) employing a good bit of flight clean bowled the opposition skipper picking up a second with an identical delivery. Steve at the other end picked up a further three wickets including a nice caught and bowled. Despite the progress being made Ickleford still had a batsman in who went on to finish with 68 not out hitting some big shots including a six that had to be retrieved by a dog having got lodged deep in a hedge. At 180 odd for 8 a regulation catch at long off was shelled by a nameless (and I’d suggest blameless) captain allowing the opposition to eventually declare on 235-9 (Steve picking up his fifth in process and finishing with 20-3-66-5). Thankfully tardy catching was not to cost the 4s dear….
A show of intent came in the first over and with Mike and Kris quickly finding their grove and the boundary punishing the slightly wayward bowling offered up by Ickleford’s young opening pair. When Kris fell for 29 managing to drag a ball a full 180 degrees onto his stumps from outside leg Jeremy Book entered the fray to continue the fluent start made by the 4s. Mike made an excellent 43 at nearly a run a ball but was snared by Ickleford’s medium paced dibby dobber who had been brought on to stem the flow of runs. Ickleford’s plan to slow the run rate by taking the pace off the ball was fine in principle but one Mr. Ketan Shah had not been factored into the equation. Ket wasted no time in tucking into the bowling hitting 16 in the first over he faced from the medium pacer as he and Jezza carried on their merry way. Jeremy made a quick fire 40 including some crunching back foot off-drives before he was castled by the returning opening quickie. Any respite Ickleford were hoping for was short lived as Sanjay “Titanic” Patnaik (38) took to the crease. Ket and Sanj forged a splendid partnership the only worry being that they would fall into a Freddie/KP (albeit slightly shorter in stature) who can swing the hardest contest. By time Ket departed skying one for 47 or 49 depending on whose scorer you believe the 4s were nearing 200 with 10 overs to get the remaining 40 odd. Sanj made this task considerably easier helping himself to an over of 4-6-4-LB shout-BIG forward defensive-4. Job done to anyone who has never seen a 4s run chase. The captain came and went bringing in Neil to assist Sanj finish off the match. Sanj not unreasonably had worked out that the run rate was down to a couple of singles an over however his eyesight began to fail him at this point and in a haze of adrenaline he started to see non-existent singles everywhere causing an entirely unnecessary run out with Neil unselfishly sacrificing himself for the in-batsman. With Neil’s wicket on his conscience Sanj was doubly determined to be there to hit the winning runs. He missed a straight one. So after a mere 20 overs of bowling under his belt Steve joined the party with Sam coming in off the back of a couple of ducks. Thankfully even with one slightly exhausted batsman and one out of form the pitch remained true, Steve lashed a cover drive to the fence and then Sam discovered his scoring shot – the soft handed dab between second slip and gully for 4 then 2 to win the match and allow all those on the sideline to breath for the first time in 5 overs.
