Match report
4s v Botany Bay 2s, Rowley Lane, 16 May
Something Old, Something New; But 4s End Up Blue (Not just from the cold!)
Last year Aniket got a ton to seal victory in this fixture but he has been elevated, deservedly, to higher things so a rather more fragile 4s batting line-up took to the field at Rowley Lane.
After a fair amount of rain the uncovered track had some green but the dominant feature was the cold, the wind and the occasional rain – so not surprisingly the Bay put us in to bat on winning the toss.
Jeremy Book was unlucky in that one rolled on to the stumps via his shirt sleeve, and Neil Dennison, promoted to 3, got a big off-cutter that took his off pole. Meanwhile Kamlesh (26) played correctly while battling the elements and seam movement, so while he and Sanjay (28) were together a decent total looked on the cards.
Laurie, a welcome addition as umpire, gave Sanjay lbw – out, we all thought, though Sanj was upset – at himself, he assured us, rather than Laurie. Chris’s strategy was ‘old, young, old, young’ when formulating his batting line-up, so 15-year old Jamie Wright came in next. He showed an ability to hang around, but the seamer friendly conditions did for him, as they did for last week’s hero Robbie McDougall. Young Robbie followed the ‘old’ (positively geriatric) skipper Chris (29) who again showed that he should occupy the all-rounder’s slot at 6. Chris’s ally in getting us up to something competitive was TCC old boy Nabil Choudhuri (29) whose fast hands and brute strength enabled him to club a rapid 29 and at least we were in the batting points when the innings closed at 152.
The old-ball trick nearly worked in that the Bay’s openers were tied down (one of them almost totally strokeless) though the new ball actually worked when Steve’s first ball with the new knacker pinned the strokeless wonder bang in front. What he was chuntering at as he shuffled off, we’ll never know. Sam Moore banged it in but on a slower track than last week he was always going to struggle, and belatedly the 4s hit on the right combination – old medium (Steve 16-4-43-1) and new medium(Andy 9-2-26-3)! Andy Budd provided the high point with a top spell of controlled swing and seam, a nice repeatable action, deservedly hitting the timbers three times. The Bay batters obviously thought the one man and one woman crowd (nice to see you Matty) came to see them bat, rather than us bowl, as the leftie no.4 refused to walk even when his stumps had been reduced to firewood. If you want to be like WG, mate, get to work on the facial hair.
Steve plugged away (you don’t say) but with no luck as catches either fell between fielders or bounced - ‘stotted’, as we say in Newcastle, off cold hands. Fair play to the Bay opener who deserved to stay put, as he played very well and anchored the innings with 56, though the lack of any clue demonstrated by their lower middle order showed just how valuable another 30 (never mind 50) runs would have been.
Barred from an empty Rowley Lane bar (party, what party?) we enjoyed a couple of jugs of lager, ordered in advance at ruinous expense. And then the real fun began back at the Ridge.
