Match report

Hatch End 140 all out
Toteridge Millhillians 3rds 90 all out
Shiyam Snaffles Seven but TMs Timbers Topple
All alliteration aside, it wasn't a particularly satisfying day at Rowley Lane for TMs 3s. After some problems with lateness, stand-in captain Hilton manfully lost the toss and allowed Hatch End to bat first. Taking the field with 9 men at the start of the innings TMs knew it would take a monstrous bowling effort to do the business. So lets have a look at Charlie and Sharky's bowling figures then. What? They didn't bowl? Didn't even get a look in you say? No, a wonderful piece of captaincy (from an Aussie no less) meant that TMs would use a front line spinner on a dry and dusty looking track.
So Shiyam took the new ball with Nick Hughes and whilst Nick took a bit of tap from one end, Shiyam tided up the aggressive opener with a juicy long hop caught on the boundary. So it was left to the aggressive opener and the aggressive number 3 to rebuild the innings. Unlikely to block a whole over, Shiyam's relentless accuracy proved too much and wickets continued to fall. Jim was brought into the attack and decided to bowl off spin from a seamer's run up. A strange sight but incredibly effective as his 20 overs went for just 50. A useful partnership was created by the aggressive number 3 and the aggressive number 4 despite their best efforts to run each other out. With one of them bragging quite loudly about how he would never be run out, he forgot to block a straight one and saw his off peg knocked back to flurry of expletives.
TMs were then faced with a new proposition, a token very defensive guy at number 5. The left hander was difficult to dislodge and even Jim Hutchenson's relentless line and outrageous spin couldn't do for him. He played and missed almost half of everything he faced but stayed on until the end amassing an unbelievable 20 not out having been at the crease for just over 30 overs. So with Shiyam taking wickets regularly, Jim taking 2 (although he deserved a few more) and a run out later, Hatch End were all done on 140. Consensus was that they were probably 25 runs better off than they should have been thanks to some lacklustre fielding.
So TMs were relatively confident chasing a relatively modest total. Book and Hughes went out to open and promptly returned having chipped the ball up on the leg side. Unfortunately having bowled 45 overs of spin at the oppo we had effectively told them how to bowl on this dustbowl.
Their opening bowler changed his run up and it turned out he was a pretty useful off spinner. He accounted for Neil Dennison for not very many bringing Joe Askham to the crease who shortly returned after tickling a ball straight into Short Leg's hands. Jim Hutchenson joined Hilton at the crease and it looked suspiciously like we might be in with a chance. The pair put on a few, not without alarm mind you, until Jim played what he thought was a solid forward defensive only to see the ball spin back and hit the stumps. Wickets continued to fall at regular intervals and once Hilton was out after not being ready to face the ball, the game seemed all but lost. Charlie Low provided some excitement late on with a few big hits towards cow corner but it was not to be as TMs were all out for a pathetic 90 from a mixture of bad luck, awful shots and just not valuing one's wicket.
One a final note, Shiyam should once again be congratulated for a gargantuan effort. He bowled unchanged for 25 overs, taking 7 wickets having not eaten a thing all day. Well done that man!
