Reed II v Totteridge Millhillians Cricket Club 3rd XI on Sat 02 May 2009 at 13:30

Match report Sunshine. May. Cricket. No longer are these three mutually exclusive.

So the 2009 season got underway for the third team last saturday, as we made the long journey to Reed to take on their second team. We arrived, somewhat late, at the picturesque village green ground, where the new skipper's understated team talk was received with profound reverence/disinterest. That is, until it was given some rough-house bolstering by a fired-up vice captain Charlie Low. Looks like no one's going to mess with Charlie, I mean me, this year.

Moving onto the game.

Having lost the toss, TMs were made to toil in the sun. Charlie Low and Jeremy Graves (carrying a calf injury that meant he would be unlikely to be able to return if rested) bowled long, tight spells. Charlie, in fact, carried his balls for 27.2 overs with a return of 4-81 at just 2.96 an over. Being a Yorkshireman, that kind of frugality is quite a turn on for me.

These two stalwarts were ably assisted by young Ollie Ridout, who fired in some smashing left arm fast bowling and claimed his first wicket of the season.

Through the sterling efforts of our bowlers, we restricted Reed to 207-9, which, bearing in mind the strength of our batting line-up, should not have been a problem. Indeed, it seemed that Tom Kalber and Mike Webb would see us home home without loss. However, just before the ton came up on our innings, a bowling change lead to the end of Tom's fluent innings of 43.

Alex Book took to the crease looking polished (if this is possible for one so hairy) and hungry for runs. He tucked in with a couple of beautiful cricket shots – all along the floor – but, sadly, fell soon after, trying to push things along.

Ex-skipper, Hutch, who seemed unsettled by the absebnce of the new skipper's Starsky cardigan, also perished early, attempting to brisken the run rate.

It fell to Shiyam to bring us back into the game. This he duly did, keeping the run rate manageable with some lusty blows, as we headed into the final five overs. When he too fell, it was time to shut up shop and prevent defeat.

Reed clearly had other ideas, with one G. Wilson taking four TMs wickets in a single over. Backs-to-the-wall time. And who better to see us safely through the final two overs than Pablo Martin?

So it was that young Pabs, employing an unorthodox tactic of expansive drives and cuts, steered us serenely through to stumps, ably abetted by vintage glovesman Stewart Werham.

Result: Totteridgemillhillians III remain unbeaten.

P.S. Anyone interested in books and cricket might want to have a butcher's hook at Netherland by Joseph O'Neill. It's a murder mystery about a Dutchman playing cricket in New York.
