Dunstable v Totteridge Millhillians Cricket Club 1st XI on Sat 09 May 2009 at 13:00
Totteridge Millhillians Cricket Club Won by 46 runs

Match report On a cool cloudy day the Totteridge Millhillians began their 2009 Division 1 campaign by recording a most extraordinary win over Dunstable at Lancot Park.

With a damp wicket and a strong cross-field breeze, both captains were keen on letting the opposition bat first, as it was TM's Shaun O'Brien's poor form of 2008 with the toss continued and the visitors were duly inserted.

Tom Kalber fell in the 1st over however TM's in form (well of course pre-season and friendlies count!!) batsman Chris Mason and O'Brien then exhibited high levels of concentration and application to record a half century partnership over the course of 20 overs. O'Brien fell to one that kept low and with the middle and lower order failing to fire it was left to Mason to salvage a score which might be deemed defensible.

Mason's 48 run and 94 ball vigil was a supreme example in how to adapt one's game on a slow, damp wicket and in the final analysis proved the crucial knock. TMs tail ensured the total passed the 100 mark and the innings finally concluded in the 45th over with the score on 112.

As the old adages were being reeled off during the tea break...'runs on the board lads'....'it's not over till both teams bat'....'we got them they need to get them', the TMs in truth felt they were about 30-40 runs shy of a decent target but were nevertheless determined to give it their all.

With Asif Sutaria (10-7-16-4) and Rizwan Siddiqui (6.3-0-16-2) taking the new ball the TMs began their improbable quest with a flourish as the pair first dried up the runs (6 runs from the first four overs) and then began to wreak havoc in the home team's top order. Suteria struck first in the 5th over followed by two from Siddiqui which only spurred Sutaria to grab two more leaving the hosts reeling on 26-5 in the 13th over. With Sutaria striking again in his 8th over and Peter Such (5-1-21-2) introduced into the attack the omens were bleak for the hosts and with Such and O'Brien (1-0-2-2, replacing Sutaria) grabbing a brace apiece Dunstable were dismissed for a mere 66 in the 23rd over.

The 2009 campaign thus begins with a win for the TMs and although there are certainly areas for improvement the determination not to give up, back thmeselves and each other, bodes well for the rest of the season.
