Hatfield v Totteridge Millhillians Cricket Club 2nd XI on Sat 23 May 2009 at 13:30
Totteridge Millhillians Cricket Club Lost by 19 runs
Match report
On a warm day in rural Hertfordshire the Hatfield skipper won the toss and decided that his team fancied a bat.Hasan Mahmood and Nozmul Hussain began prceedings for the TMs and a breakthrough was made when the opener was clean bowled by Hussain. This brought in their No3 who began slowly and in the 30s offered the most simplest of chances in the covers that was grassed by 'he(S)who(A)shall(R)not(F)be(R)mentioned(A)by(Z)name!!'
The rather grateful No 3 doffed his cap at his benefactor and proceeded to nudge and nurdle his way to what turned out to be a match winning 99 not out. Khan once again was the pick of the bowlers picking up five wickets as the Hatfield innings concluded at the end of the 53rd over with the score on 199-7.
The TMs innings began in peculiar fashion as it seemed Zakuan Chowdhury was playing garden style 'tip and run'. Having survived no less than five close run outs in the initial 3 overs of the innings his partner Shezad decided (mostly in the interests of self preservation) that it was time for a bit of B&B....block or boundary.
As the run rate moved along at around 3 per over and with the regular falling of wickets it was left to the pocket battleship from Essex; Javed Soomro to inject some much needed 'Ilford faces' bish-bash-bosh into the innings. Having guaged the attack and deciphered the wicket he proceeded to flay the Hatfield tyros to all parts and with 3 wickets in hand the game was for the taking as TMs needed just 28 off the last 5 overs (having been 70-3 after 25 overs).
However.......as ever the game turned on a decision, this time by the Hatfield umpire who adjudged Mahmood lbw, despite the incredulous expressions on both batsman. Very next ball ......bang!! Ajmal is clean bowled. So with No11 dragging himself into the fray Soomro decided it was him or nothing. Unfortunately Nothing won as two balls later he fell attempting to complete the chase.
So despite the best efforts of Tweaker Khan and the RMS Soomro, the TMs went down to their second loss of the season but did pick up 13 points.
