With the 1st X1 beginning their campaign next week it was left to the Totteridge Millhillians (TMs) 2s to kick off the club’s 2009 campaign with a bang as Aleem Hussain’s unbeaten century resulted in a comprehensive eight wicket victory over Ickleford.

On a warm day Ickleford won the toss, elected to bat and on a hard, true deck set off at a blistering pace despite the loss of a couple of early wickets to Asif Suteria and Rizwan Siddiqui, the run rate eventually was reined back by the spin duo of Chris Mason and (captain) Imran Khan who each picked up three wickets apiece. Once the dangerous Ickleford opener, Jenner, was removed with the score on 120-8 it seemed a matter of time before the innings was wrapped up, however the home team had other ideas and the last two wickets put on a highly creditable 72 runs before the innings eventually concluded with the score on 192 all out in 43 overs.

At the interval the TMs were confident that on this wicket Ickleford were at least 60 runs shy of a par score and so it proved to be as openers Aleem Hussain and Chris Mason took the attack to the Ickleford bowlers and raced to 100 by the 18th over. Mason having reached his half century fell soon after as he tried to clear long on bringing Shaun O’Brien to the crease. O’Brien’s innings was as entertaining as it was brief and he fell lbw attempting a reverse sweep for 22. Meanwhile Hussain continued to pile on the agony for Ickleford who had dropped the opener twice early in his innings and with Shakeel Durrani as company reached his deserved century with just a run required for victory which Durrani duly knocked off the following delivery of the 30th over.

A victory then for the TM IIs who following the disappointment of last season have made a good start in their push for promotion to Division 2.
