Match report
A WARM BALMY DAY. Gentle breeze. A DRY PLAYABLE TMCC pitch and Riz’s ‘Pub team’ as he put it….what more could one ask for??
The captain’s reign was handed to Rakesh this week as boom boom was busy with his parents and showing them London… so put in the field by 10 man Homerton and Riz opening the batting…the game began in earnest but at a gentle Sunday laid back pace
Malik and Andrew shared the honours of opening the bowling and with Riz batting some drama were inevitable. No, not one of his famous lofty drives, but a run out! An of drive down to Rakesh was called for a single and with refusal from Riz, his batting partner already down the ground tried to his ground in vain to one of our better fielders and a superb throw into the keepers hands and out. ‘There was always as single there, always a single’ as he trudged of. Next in was your unorthodox one that we get in Sunday games. No guard, batting out of his crease and looking to hit each ball brought some entertainment. Riz on the other end played sensibly and scored runs even running singles. The scoreboard ticking along, change in bowling brought Rahul and Vic on and they both found their rhythm and worked in tandem to slow the run rate down a tad…but still the odd lose ball was punished and with Mr unorthodox doing his thing the 2nd wicket fell. In came Daniel who looked the business. Helmet, good stance and focussed. Defending sensibly and playing around Riz, they took the score along nicely and another call and another run out…Riz again…Rakesh again…..Ah well. Riz continued building his innings whilst others came and went. In between debutant Freddie Ridout bowling admirably with his leg breakers kept the runs down. At the other a welcome of Matty Johnson fired down a few balls to Riz and some cat and mouse tactics going on. At one stage Matt had all 9 fielders on the off-side. Overs ticked by, the score kept edging and going along and another debutant – Deepak came in to bowl a few spinners. Coming into the run in and Riz looking to accelerate only led to his downfall as Deepak cleaned bowled the prize wicket. Well batted for a well held together of 91 meant TM’s would be chasing 176 from their 40 overs.
….There followed a rather longer than anticipated tea break as some of the fayre was being prepared…but well worth the wait. A well fed Homertons took their place in the field. Riz had tea and disappeared home and so we helped out the oppo by giving them our fielders to fill the gaps.
Malik and Kamlesh opened and Malik soon fell to a loopy plum lbw. In came a promoted and happy bunny Rahul at 3. At this point both batsmen were hitting a few boundaries and looking to keep their 4/5 runs per over target ticking along. A forward push from Kam and two runs called ….but Rahul was unable to make his ground and was run out…with some dispute it has to be said. Rahul and the boys seated on the boundary definitely thought he was in. Homerton maintained his bat was in the air. So off he went and in came Rakesh looking to build on and make some runs. As with him, he looked comfortable and both of them started taking good and quick singles whilst hitting boundaries when the opportunity arose. But on came their best bowler Daniel, putting the ball on a length and swinging it away. Rakesh fell lbw to him and the score had reached the 100 mark or so. Kam kept playing on holding the innings together and had gone on to reach fifty or so. Arun joined him and they kept the score rolling on. Arun playing sensibly and looking to give Kam as much of the strike as possible. So having reached the 80 mark give or take, Kam pushed for a single and in the process severe cramp in his left leg left in some agony as he made it the crease. Matt sensing this immediately rushed over and started stretching the tight calf muscles. Simon Shoreman kindly brought on some ice to soothe the calf and between the two of them ensured Kam could continue his innings. At this point something must have clicked besides the cramp. With the score some 30 odd away and enough overs to play, their opening bowler was brought on. With Kam seeing the ball like a football and the ball coming nicely onto the bat, he hit him for 4 consecutive fours and raced to mid 90’s. He edged towards the century mark with some singles and glances of his leg. 97…..then facing their other opening bowler and lose ball was hit for four past square leg and another centurion for TM’s this weekend. Another set of boundaries and TM’s raced past 176 in 33 overs to seal victory, with Kam ending on 106 not out…joining James Marshall as top scores this weekend for the club. Of course in the scheme of things James’s century for the 1’s on Saturday was more difficult against a good Berkhampstead side but hey two centuries from our players can’t be bad.
