CUP Game - Reed v Totteridge Millhillians Cricket Club Sunday XI on Sun 05 Jun 2011 at 12.30 PM
Totteridge Millhillians Cricket Club Lost

Match report Target reduced to 153 on a rule made up by the umpires, of which the Vice-Chairman, who made history by giving a wide from square leg, was one. So there.

Up for the cup? Well we went up to Reed, a long old schlep up the A10, to a picturesque ground accessed via a very narrow alley between two houses. The V-C has already had issues with stationary cars this season, so a narrow alley presented some challenges to his tank driving skills, but his passengers arrived safely.
Reed have challenges on various Cup fronts so, like TMCC, their XI was drawn from the full range of the club’s playing strength - a few familiar faces from the 3s draw two weeks ago were on show. A road-like track beckoned, so it was a minor surprise when the Reed skipper inserted us on winning the toss, but we bow to his local knowledge.
A interesting first over then ensued. Four - high no ball clipped for one – two – four – dot – single – jaffa that cleaned up Arjun, or AJ. Cooper reflected on his figures of 1-0-13-1. After a relatively boring second over, Cooper then had 1.2-0-13-2 as Vivek also had his timbers shivered by a quick ‘un scuttling through his ‘defences’. Or his ‘attacks’, as Viv doesn’t have much of a back four, to be honest.
The upper middle order of Saf and Shakeel didn’t hang around too long as straight full bowling had its usual effects, but Rakesh carried on serenely driving and cutting stylishly. How this man languished so long in the 4s is one of those eternal mysteries that we can ponder over. It could be of course, that the 4s had a league to win last year.

Rakesh had dominated the scoring and it came as a genuine shock when he too was bowled, the mode of dismissal de jour, for a handsome 38 (b). At 61 for 5 from 12 overs, nobody could accuse this cricket of being boring, but surely some stability was in order. That stability was provided by the unlikely (?) pair of PK and captain Riz. A spokesman for PK put the injury that took him off the field later to the one single he ran in his innings of 31 from 41 balls – it was either dot, four or six for Nelson – the burly biffer don’t do that running thing! Riz’s 22 was a captain’s hand, but the real novelty came when Siva strode to the crease. Not every day does one see a totally new cricket shot aired in public, but June 5 will go down as one of those days.
For on June 5 2011 the few who were present saw the SivaShovel (pronounced Shivashovel) first aired in public. The bowler has to be in on the act, of course, as he has to serve up a leg-side full toss. That part completed, Siva spun on his heels and flipped it directly behind him (good job the keeper was standing back) in a kind of pelota/jai alai shot which ran down the bat before an extra bit of wrist action took it smack into the sightscreen for six. Sadly Rahul played with boring orthodoxy, a lovely extra cover drive for 4 being his sole scoring shot, before Siva perished for 21 from 12 balls. Cooper looked like a young adherent of the Devon Malcolm school of strike bowling with his figures of 8.5-1-52-5. The 5 is the important bit, of course.
165 all out in 36.5 was the tale the book told. Then the rain came and we tucked into tea. The pizza was vegetarian, the pate certainly was not. The umpires convened over the playing conditions. It never really stopped raining, to be honest, but we all wanted to get on with it so we agreed that 4 overs were lost and the reduced target was 153.

Riz and Shakeel opened, and bent their backs to take advantage of the track freshened up by the rain. Shakeel, aka WG, aka Uncle Albert, rolled back those years as he pinged it down and after a wide and a high no-ball bowled a beautiful off-cutter to send Martin back. Riz joined in the fun by bowling McKechnie, but no. 3 Greaves, who had earlier bowled a tight spell of off-spin, dug in and hit the loose balls hard.
Vivek also pinged it in sharpish and hit the stumps, bowling Johnston for 23, the tenth time in the match that mode of dismissal had been effected. However Arun ‘Mad As A Caravan’ bowled perhaps TMCC’s best spell, though he deserved better than 0 for 26 from 8 – he was played with a lot of respect by the Reed section. He mixed up offies and arm balls, quick ones and slow ones, though Rahul and the drinks break took the next wicket as Greaves chipped a tame return catch when close to a well-deserved 50. Rahul bowled full, straight and slow, and well.
Riz’s second spell brought him another wicket with one of only two balls that misbehaved all day, but it was too little, too late, as a big six (are there ever small sixes?) clattered into the screens (the ones in front of the batsman), and that was that.
