Totteridge Millhillians Cricket Club Warriors - U13 v Southgate on Sun 08 May 2011 at 10am
Totteridge Millhillians Cricket Club Lost by 5 wickets
Match report
A previous night of heavy rain meant the game may not take place. Fortunately some breezes and sun saw to it and with Steve’s help, we played on the artificial turf for this cup game. The weather held fair, and for the U13’s their second game in as many days. Again we played with the proper cricket rules of lbw’s, wides and no balls being played as normal.
Toss lost, we were put in to bat first. Daniel Levy and Jake opening this time. The Southgate opening bowlers looked good and came in with smooth run ups and actions to be admired. Daniel was out to quick delivery that rattles the stumps. In came Jacob and with Jake, TM’s started to bat with some good clean hitting and runs flowing from both batsmen. We got to the mid-way point of ten over with a good looking score. All throughout, Southgate shuffled their bowlers, who all looked good and bowled well, but they had no answer to Jake and Jacob, both taking quick singles and hitting fours down the slope and the ball racing away. Jake eventually fell for a well made 16 and in came Shirom. Jacob continued with his good form and with Shirom nudging singles kept the momentum going with the run rate flowing nicely too. In came the opposition spinner bowling with good flight and length. Jacob looking to hit one was bowled for a top score of 25. Shirom followed soon having made a patient 6. With over dwindling away, we were looking to start hitting out. Just when we are looking good, a couple of basic errors of not grounding our bats meant we lost two hitters in Bhavik and Saif..and so by the 20th over we had made a good score of 87. Again a quick change and into to bowl.
Again we opened with the left and right combination of Saif and Bhavik. Shaym again behind the stumps. Saif quickly taking an early wicket with a splendid bowl. This shook the opposition’s confidence and it appeared they were a better bowling side than batting side. Jake came in to bowl at 3 and again quickly got a wicket. In came batsmen 3 & 4, who then steadied the ship making some patient runs. Ollie came in for his first spell and bowled well and with some pace. His action confusing some of the batsmen for sure. At the other end Daniel Levy came in with his gentle spin and the two bowlers restricted the run flow to singles, as Daniel bowled two useful maidens in the process and taking three wickets in the process, bat 3 out LBW after making 24. Bat 4 c & b Daniel again and bat six out to good catch from Shirom – bowler who else but Daniel. Good spell ended and in between Bhavik taking his first wicket with a wonderful inswinger trapping bat 5 with LBW. Victory seemed with our grasp as the lower order bats came in nervously and not looking confident. However just at the finishing line and we bowled too many wides easing their run chase. Bhavik then bowled a good maiden and Saif at the other end in the zone with some tight bowling. This was going to the wire……ball by ball…..87 target…a run here, a run there. Southgate nervous. TM’s – a possible cup victory! Then two fours…and Southgate edge it with 2 balls to spare!!!!
So another game we could have won, this time much closer and again lessons learnt. A better team performance, better fielding, bowling and catching…but a slightly disheartened TM’s as we were this close.
Many thanks to all parents for ensuring good timekeeping, Faisel Baree in helping to score and Jim Hutcheson as assistant.
