Holtwhites Trinibis B v Totteridge Millhillians Cricket Club Warriors - U13 on Fri 06 May 2011 at 6pm
Totteridge Millhillians Cricket Club Lost by 7 wickets
Match report
Having had a game cancelled a week earlier, the U13’s Colts were raring to start their season and the first game away to Holtwhites Trinibis, Enfield was eagerly anticipated. Blessed with a warm summer evening, a warm breeze, a solid looking track and a fast outfield, we chose to bat as a few players were still making their way to the ground. We decided to play a normal game giving wides and no balls as part of the score and the bowlers having to bowl that extra ball. Best way to learn we felt.
So with nerves jangling a touch, Andreas and Jonathan were put in by Bhavik to open. Their opening bowlers in with some style and action and were hitting their line and length from early doors. So after a few Colts type of defence shots and some confidence growing, Andreas does what he does, i.e. just let loose. He cracked a couple of fours smoothly to the boundary, with one a fluid on drive most others would have been proud of also. With a fast outfield and the opposition players standing back, boundaries continued to flow from the bat of Andreas. Jonathan kept him company for a few overs before being bowled. Still his work was done and in came Jake at 3. Again a few nervy moments to settle down before Jake joined Andreas in hitting a few boundaries racing away down their slope, though not as pronounced as our infamous one at Totteridge. The two quick wickets lost as Jake on 11 and Andreas having made 20 brought in Jacob and Daniel. Another wicket as Daniel was bowled and in came Daniel Levy. As their confidence grew from some early nerves, both started scoring freely and our score was heading towards the 100 mark, which started worrying Holtwhites. Daniel went for a well made 13 and Jacob for 23 and with over running out Bhavik and Saif were asked to hit out to get what they could. At close of 20 overs we had made 107 and felt confident. A quick tea/sandwich and in we went to bowl. Bhavik and Saif opened the bowling with an impressive line and length restricting their openers to quick singles. Seeing them take this with ease was impressive also. Bowler change and Daniel Levy came to bowl his gentle spin and our first wicket with a caught and bowled. One brings two and their second bat was run out which was a relief as both openers were studiously examining the score board and pacing their run chase very well. Jake then came on having swapped weeketkeeping duties with Shyam, keeping for the first time. Jake started well and bowled out number three. Shyam did a good job behind the stumps considering this was his first match as ‘keeper. By this time, some nerves set in for Holtwhites and TM’s looking for a win. In came a very confident looking bat 4 and 5 in tandem looking to strike loose balls with some aplomb. Shirom and Andreas came in to bowl next and a few fours meant the game swung in the oppositions favour. TM’s bowlers replaced and some loose leg side deliveries resulting in about 40 wides meant Holtwhites reached the winning line…with number four n/o for 23 and five n/o for 14.
So we learnt a few things. Taking singles, line and length bowling and calling. Many positives to take from the match for TM’s bearing in mind our first ever game at this level.
So a slightly disappointed TM’s side nearly pulled of their first victory as although Holtwhites may have eased home with 7 wickets in hand, the game was much closer than the score appears to be. TM U13’s 107 for 8. Extras 37 from 20 overs. Holtwhites 109 for 3 from just under 13 overs. Extras 40 We await the return match eagerly at home.
Many thanks to all parents for ensuring good timekeeping and Sanjay Patnaik for his assistance.
