Wanstead CC v Totteridge Millhillians Cricket Club Ladies XI on Sun 08 May 2011 at 13:00
Totteridge Millhillians Cricket Club Lost by 2 Wickets

Match report Those with long memories will recall that Wanstead CC was the scene of the ladies' first ever win - it was a long time ago and progress has been massive since then, but even so the memory of that occasion put everyone in good spirits for the new season.

On what was obviously a 'bowl first' pitch on their second ground, shaped something like a bowl, uphill at both ends then dipping in the middle, the opposition skipper won the toss and did just that. Emma W and Sarah took guard. The ball was swinging and rearing from a length, and not surprisingly the top order struggled against a strong seam attack. Ciara arrested the decline with some dogged defence, and gradually began the long crawl up to a competitive score. Emma B biffed it to leg for 21, Aileen played some beautiful shots off both front and back feet through the off side on her way to 17, while Julie defied her hamstring injury by adding 9 hops of her own, way down at no.10. From 12 for 5 to 85 all out represented a wonderful recovery, and with our bowling attack all was not lost by any means.

Ali has added a few paces to her run-up and that has brought better rhythm and control to add to the pace she's always had. While the Wanstead openers dug deep - they had 30 overs in which to get the runs - Ali did a quick bowler's job by getting both of 'em out. Aileen opened in a contrast of styles, but Sarah did the real damage by laying waste to the middle order. While 4 for 12 are top figures she had 4 for 2 at one point, taking advantage of the strong cross-wind to swing it in.

Everyone chipped in, Emma B by dismissing the tall opening bowler who hit it a long, long way - Emma W by having the presence of mind to catch another threatening bat at the second attempt. Shanyn's unique library of encouragements ('Canada', anyone? was that because they had an American playing for them? ) raised everyone's spirits. A close lbw shout turned down by a very strict umpire (who he?) was perhaps the last hurrah, and when the scores were level 4 byes took the game away from TMCC and Wanstead had, er, won.

Even with an inevitable level of rust this was an excellent performance against a strong side that bodes well for the new campaign. A telling statistic was the extras count - we conceded 44 to their 22 - but with so many positives, we tucked into the home-made cake with gusto and look forward to Potters Bar early on Sunday! Canada, oh Canada!
