Totteridge Millhillians Cricket Club 3rd XI v Hemel Hempstead III on Sat 06 Aug 2011 at 1:00pm
Totteridge Millhillians Cricket Club Won by 5 wickets
Match report
A routine win? Not really, but a fairly trouble-free one, and thirty very valuable points as the 3s clamber back up to the fringes of the promotion race.
We were at Rowley Lane for the first time in several weeks, the midweek rain had softened up the coverless square and the self-appointed Pitch Selection Committee (aka Steve and Denzil) chose the less green of the two that had been prepared. Nevertheless, and as an ageing rocker might say, it was still Pretty Green.
Therefore when Steve lost the toss and Hemel’s skipper-cum-chairman and general good egg Roger Doodson opted to bat, cue sighs of relief at a Good Toss To Lose.
Mark Dearing was back in 3s colours, as was Sharky, in a late selection bonus, and they took the new ball. Mark cranked up his engine and Ben Abrahams, making his second appearance for the 3s, enjoyed the ball smacking into his gloves chest high. Sharky booked in for a Ramadan Special (no respite from bowling in the daylight hours) and hit the spot right away. While one opener looked sound and orthodox, the other demonstrated what looked like the Hemel 3s house technique against seam and swing – walk several paces down the track and have a swish. Progress was unremarkable until Le Shark hit a spot that gave some lift so when Clulow, the sound one, went back naturally he was pinned in front and had to go. Le S then sent Mr Walk-down-the-track’s off stump walkabout, and Steve persuaded no.3 to play against the swing and sent a high leading edge down Mitesh’s throat at mid-on. Mark at this stage had taken a blow after 6 pacy overs for 15. The left-handed no.4 who looked ok also had his furniture demolished by Sharky, while the second bat who liked to come to meet the bowlers took the game temporarily to a different phase. He had an excellent eye, and a good bat, and hit some lusty blows. Meanwhile Shark had removed the one man who looked capable of staying with him, skipper Roger D, who essayed his favourite late cut once too often, against a full ball on off-stump, which he promptly lost.
Some ‘interesting’ running between the wickets accounted for the next bat, smart work by Aniket, but only after Jeremy atoned for an earlier drop by taking a stunning running and diving catch to dismiss Samad, the big hitter. Steve then saw his opportunity to terrorise the teenage tail and duly took them out, no.9 a top catch by keeper Ben off a nice outswinger, while no.10 got the one that went the other way and his stumps went over.
Sharky bowled with great skill and stamina and could not even take a drink to refresh him during his marathon effort. Steve enjoyed the atmosphere and the track and went for barely more than a run an over. After such bowling and an excellent fielding performance (hats off to Ben, Rahul, Neil, Mitesh, everyone) we went for ‘tea’ in high spirits. Sadly no other bowlers got a look-in but as it wasn’t broken, there was no need to fix it.
Aniket and Jeremy knew their roles and gave us an excellent start, Jeremy in particular looking in great nick, crashing the ball through the off side fluently. In his 37 he hit 9 x 4 and a single single. Aniket carried on serenely, but a few minor panics spread through the home side’s ranks as Jim picked out square leg, Mitesh got one that reared up face-high and gave him no chance, and Sanjay missed a straight one. From 46 for 0 we had gone to 68 for 4, but Aniket and Ben made the game safe with their solid and stylish partnership. Sadly one more wicket fell than was necessary , when Aniket was run out on a decision by the otherwise excellent oppo umpire, but by then it made no difference. Ben finished on 24 not out and Sharky, the man of the match for his 22-6-60-6, had the honour of hitting the winning run.
