Totteridge Millhillians Cricket Club 3rd XI v Hitchin II on Sat 02 Jul 2011 at 1:00pm

Match report
It’s all about the numbers, innit. 62, 185, 62, 185, 188, 62. The number 62 crops up a good deal in this report, mainly because it was the number of two very bad things last week; we let the Flitwick ‘pinch hitter’ score 62, and we scored 62 in total. Of its additional significance this week, there is more to follow – except that it is the number of the bus I used to catch, as a youth, into and out of the centre of a certain northern city. If I told you which one, I’d have to shoot you.
A cricket match took place on the icy tundra of Rowley Lane on Saturday. Not icy in terms of the temperature, but rather in terms of the welcome. We’re not high up the list of priorities at RL, which is roughly – football, parties, more parties, more football, then a very large gap (like the one between the top 3 and Andy Murray) and then cricket.
The pitch was, and I know this for a fact, the one on which Boaz Feinmesser and his compadres of London Maccabi Under-15s took on and beat Shoresy’s TMCC Under-15s on Wednesday evening. The stump holes were still too close together. Ah well, we said, it’s the same for both sides...
We welcomed Aniket Gocoldas back into the fold. Jim applied his penchant for opening things to the batting. Jeremy ‘Gravy’ Graves batted at 6 and made a good fist of it, though not so good as Pete Leslie’s fist at five (fifty free). Hilton made a quarter century batting at three, and Charlie an undefeated equal contribution at nine, while the tail wagged Waxily to take us up to the second of today’s numbers – 185. For 9. This meant 8 batting points, something to bowl at, and we weren’t bowled out. From 46 for 4 this was an excellent recovery, but it was proved only to be excellent in comparison to the 62, the bus of my youth, the sum total of last week’s batting efforts, and a number of some significance.
Charlie and Steve took the new ball. It was humid, overcast, conditions tailor-made for swing. And swing it did. Both bowlers beat the bat often. But nicks did not go to hand. However frustration led Hitchin’s no.2 to drive at a ball that wasn’t quite there and Shahrukh, another welcome returnee, took a sharp catch at mid-off. False shots flew just out of reach on several occasions, and soon enough Steve had a second success in similar style as a tied-down batter mistimed a drive to mid-on, Gregg pouching it.
But from then on it was down the hill backwards. Middleditch hit the gaps and put away the bad balls. His partner and skipper Thomson played an admirable supporting role. As had happened last week a normally ultra-reliable fielder grassed a catch (Middleditch when on 40 or so). 60 for 3 may have made for an interesting finish.
Sharky bowled a quick second spell which bodes well for the near future. Waqas and Jim had goes but the batsmen were well set and made little headway. Hitchin II are a good side, or have several good players, and they took full advantage of a tiring attack on a pitch which gave that attack nothing in terms of assistance – except perhaps the one that stayed low (which did for several of our lads). As the scorecard reveals, Middleditch went on to 115 not out and Thomson 54 not out, and Hitchin to 188 for 2.
Ah yes, the final 62. Some months ago the writer bought several tickets for TMCC’s 100 Club draw. Alighting on a group of numbers and thinking of the many happy hours spent with his early Sony Walkman and/or an Evening Chronicle, they fell in the 60’s. And on Saturday, the first draw took place. And I Won. With number 62. I’m sure you’re very pleased, if you have read this far.
