Totteridge Millhillians Cricket Club 3rd XI v Shenley Village II on Sat 04 Jun 2011 at 1:00pm
Totteridge Millhillians Cricket Club Won by 2 wickets
Match report
A win is a win is a win. Played 6, won 4, drawn 1, lost 1.
Charlie’s 4 for 72 took him to an amazing 19 wickets already, Arun bowled a beautiful spell of tight but aggressive off-spin, and Jim chipped in with a wicket.
For the fielding side, 173 for 7 was a good effort on a road-like track and a lightning fast outfield. Special mention must go to Mike for his keeping, and to Gregg Cruder for his running, diving and throwing from way ‘down the hill’. Alexander’s check drive for 6 off the V-C was perhaps the shot of the match, and he looked as though he could take the game away from us, but after he’d gone, the only innings of note was Williams’s 63, so well done chaps on restricting things to that fairly modest total.
When Pete and Hilton were together things looked very calm, but 56 for 1 soon became 61 for 4. We are all aware of how hard it is to find umpires willing to stand, game in, game out, and as a result their commitment and contribution must at all times be respected. But that respect must surely include conscious avoidance of over-appealing when it is clear that an umpire's judgement is not, perhaps, what it once was. Pete and Alex both suffered from a lack of this respect, the latter in particular consoled in no way whatsoever by the opposition slip cordon repeatedly offering their condolences - for the second week running - after one of the more ludicrous leg-before decisions you're likely to see. It's a real shame that the game is still being played with such a lack of cricketing spirit, particularly by a bowler who was bowling plenty well enough not to need to resort to such distasteful tactics. With appropriate respect to the umpires who give of their time so generously, responsibility must rest with players and captains not to abuse the spirit of our otherwise beautiful game. Still, perhaps the last two weeks have shown that in any event, cheats never prosper! Moving on...
Concentrating on the positives, Jim and Gregg then built the partnership (of 101) that rebuilt the innings, and took us to the cusp of victory. TCC old boy Shelley (it was a long time ago) bowled with some pace and a lot of stamina, but until Singh chipped in, with two in two, Gregg and Martin (first baller, oops) late on he got precious little support from his team-mates. Mike fell for 4, Arun likewise, and though his cracking off-drive brought the scores level he’ll be disappointed not to have finished the job off.
That honour didn’t fall to a TMCC batsman as a wide sped to, and over, the fence to drag us over the line. It’s a real shame Jim couldn’t get some bat on it, but he won’t care, as his 73 with 12 x 4s was a real captain’s and match-winning innings. Incredibly, he even hit some of those 4s on the posh side, though they were kind of slogged to backwards point, if you know what I mean. Gregg played the supporting role in terms of speed of scoring but played a vital part in rebuilding the innings that itself built on a promotion-worthy performance in the field.
Up into the promotion spots for the first time this season, and deservedly so.
