Match report
Was the pitch a road? There was a road within the confines of the outfield, it’s true; but the pitch was no road. We all knew what Biblical rain fell during the week, so a nice hard track had a lovely coating of green (a bowler writes)making it the seam bowler’s perfect surface. Naturally they put us in on winning the toss. We would have done the same. But look at the result, and draw your own conclusions.
A few changes meant the 3s had a 4s feel with Sanjay Patnaik making his debut, Steve now established, Mike Pratt coming in to keep, and Mark Dearing coming in to play with his hose. And for Hannah to bring Alfred so everyone could ooh and aah.
Jeremy Graves and Pete Leslie were reunited at t’top of order and they dug deep to withstand some excellent quick bowling from the Milk Snatcher. But an opening stand of 63 (Pete 36)in 24 overs was a perfect platform, allowing Hilton to express himself with his drives and cuts and guttural ‘goggoggos’. Jeremy fell soon after for a dogged 32 but Sanjay showed himself to be totally at home in 3s cricket dashing up to 24 in no time. But no further, sadly. Alex and Gregg both had cause for reflection, Alex at how he can attract so many egregious lbw decisions, Gregg on how to communicate decisions on whether to run or not with his batting partners. Hilton, carrying on serenely, found his perfect ally in Mike P who nudged and pushed and ran hard to push us up past the ten-point and 200-run mark. Selflessly sacrificing himself on a hopeless run, there was time for Charlie to biff his way to 8* and for Hilton to cruise to 73* when the declaration came after 52 overs – surely 218 was enough.
Mark paced out his run-up and huffed and puffed through some nice sharp overs. He did his strike bowler job perfectly, removing no.2 early doors, aided by an excellent catch by Sanjay in the gully. This enabled Charlie to wheel away and do what he does best, the green deck, wind and atmosphere allowing him to dominate – when they played for the awayswinger, they got the offcutter, and vice versa. He hit the stumps four times, found the edge several times and had the plumbest lbw in the history of cricket, such was his mastery. The sorcerer had his apprentices – when Steve took over from Mark, his swinging and seaming mojo was back in abundance. A perfect ‘outie’ took a big nick and Mike did the rest. Hard hands no.6 found Alex, on the drive, who showed that both Book boys can catch by having the presence of mind to watch for the deflection and calmly pouch it. Alex then rang the changes, enjoying the luxury of being in a commanding position. Arun showed that spinners could have fun on this deck too, by turning it square from the off. Mike again made the assist for Arun’s first, and then the big no.10, who had enjoyed himself by taking 10 from Charlie’s 15th over, thereby ‘ruining’ his figures from 5-18 to 5-28, became Arun’s second, cleaned up by a sharply turning off-break. 89 all out.
How many times will I write ‘Charlie bowled beautifully’ this season? Or indeed ‘Hilton batted superbly’? Both were true, again, but this was no two-man show. All eleven contributed to a superb team performance, by a team with depth in the batting, excellence in fielding, and a strong balanced attack. A no-nonsense, emphatic win, in lovely surroundings, allowing time for observing the old rituals when we enjoyed a couple of drinks with a very friendly Redbourn team as the sun belatedly came out. Nice.
