Potters Bar III v Totteridge Millhillians Cricket Club 3rd XI on Sat 14 May 2011 at 1:00pm
Totteridge Millhillians Cricket Club Won by 3 wickets

Match report It was the best of times, it was the worst of times ... it was a tale of two bowlers, who took all the wickets: it was a tale of two batsmen, who scored all the runs. Other bowlers shuffled up and let it go, to no avail: other batsmen impersonated the two genuine articles, and failed. But then a win’s a win for a’ that.
On a school ground with a new pavilion and a tortuous route to the facilities three of us took the skipper’s word on timekeeping all too literally and arrived before the home side. Others drifted in as and when, incurring his wrath yet again. Losing the toss we were delighted to be in the field after last week’s triumph, as PB opted to bat in the search for points that had been elusive so far in 2011.
Charlie and Sharky took the new ball on a dry pitch on a sandy field with a wicked wind whipping across from the M25. A tentative maiden was then followed by the no.2 playing several centuries too early before Sharky’s slower ball (slowed by the 90 mph wind he was struggling into) only just eased a bail off: 0 for 1. Charlie reeled off several maidens and his oppo gave nothing away either, but then the wind changed and so did the Bar’s fortunes, as Daley found the square boundaries on either side alarmingly regularly. At 4+ an over with Daley outscoring his partner 4 to 1 James came up with an inspired move, chucking the nut to Waqas who might be able to exploit the wind and the dry pitch. As his figures show, he did this admirably, making early inroads and enjoying a nice long spell. After Charlie began to struggle with his line, the ‘funny old game’ syndrome struck again as last week’s heroes became ... sorry. Anyway Steve couldn’t locate the spot either so in another inspired move Jim brought Sharky back on with the wind behind him. After Daley went for 68, a top catch by Arjun off Wax, the two bowlers who bowled properly cleaned up by sharing the wickets 60:40. Wax’ 6-59 was a TMCC best and Sharky’s 4-54 an excellent support act.
Just like last week we had 50+ overs to get a modest total, and the Jeremies, looking splendidly old-school, got down their nuts. Or got their nuts down. PB may have been short on points but long on common sense as they opened with a spinner and a slow-medium swinger... though captain bowlers may not always be the best judges of how long to bowl themselves, as their boss offered 8-5-6-1, and promptly took himself off, never to be seen again in bowling mode. The one was Gravesy, lb to an inducker. His departure brought about the partnership that very nearly took us to victory: while Book J ought to have been held at mid-off early on, he never looked back after that, hitting 17 x 4s in his 84, batting quite beautifully and dominating a partnership of 123. Hilton, despite his aches and pains, proved able to scuttle between the wickets alarmingly quickly – however his patented call of ‘ggoggoggoggoggoggo’ sounded more like the death gurglings of a man having his throat cut. We all know he’s Not A Well Man but that was ridiculous. The young quickie insisted on banging it in half way down and we (or Jeremy and Hilton) insisted on hooking it to the boundary – proper cricket.
Then came the silly bit. Hilton (35) (runs, not years) got a shocker that popped up throat high from a length and gave him no hope. Jez’s 84 excuses him from any criticism. Joe Askham may have learned how to hit an on-drive properly but went attempting that shot once too often for 10. Phil got an apology from the umpire after the match – enough said. Jim tried to relive Malaga by smashing it over ‘the man’s side’ but missed a straight full toss and had to go, first ball. Arjun then played all round another straight one, and we had gone from 136 for 1 to 160 for 7 in the space of 6 overs. Quickly scuttling back to the changing room to get padded up, etc., Waqas and Sharky then drew on their bowling successes to see us home. It was no surprise to see us win with 4 overthrows, however, we had descended into chaos to such a degree.
The analysis could come later, the win was the thing, and a win it was, so it was a case of Just Rejoice. Big 3-Oh, 74 points from the first 3 games.
