Totteridge Millhillians Cricket Club 3rd XI v Northwood II on Sat 07 May 2011 at 1:00pm
Totteridge Millhillians Cricket Club Won by 8 wickets, 30 points
Match report
Saturday 7 May
Northwood II 154 all out (42 overs) TMCC III 155-2 (48.1 overs)
TMCC III won by 8 wickets
Where do I begin? To tell the story of how great a catch can be? The simple story that is older than the sea? Where do I start?
Well you start with a half-volley on middle and leg, which may not be the conventional route to adding ‘1’ to the wickets column, but as all bowlers know, it’s not always the beautiful outswingers, or the crafty off-cutters, or the ripped leggies, as they can’t usually lay a bat on them, so we deserve the odd break. Said half-volley came from the V-C, back at the Coppice end at the Ridge, was clipped away confidently by the solid looking Northwood no.4, who was congratulating himself on four more runs, when the skipper James Hutcheson threw himself in to the air horizontally, clung on to (two words, illiterates) the ball inches from the turf (real and artificial) with two hands, rolled over, came up beaming, albeit not so widely as the V-C, who had got away with murder, and threw the ball many a mile into the air in celebration. That’s how you do it.
But I digress. That was just one of many Moments of Success (Potential sponsors apply to Mrs K Shoreman c/o TMCC) that the IIIs enjoyed in a performance that was infinitely superior to last week’s effort.
The skipper who could do no wrong began by winning the toss, a big advantage with a pitch livened and greened up by heavy rain that morning. Sticking them in he gave the new ball to Charlie Low, as is only right and proper, and Jeremy Graves, who struggled with his line and was withdrawn sharpish. Of the Sergeant, more later.
Charlie picked up an early wicket by pinning the opener in front. This brought the swaggering no.3 to the crease, who alternating between blazing drives and extravagant forward defensives (if that’s not oxymoronic), threatened to take the game miles away from the IIIs, until the V-C, after being clattered for two massive sixes, nipped a crafty off-cutter through his gate and he was gorn for a rapid 26. Then came The Catch, and another less spectacular effort by JH, and a few more rapid breakthroughs, as the youth policy of Low and Lyall worked their way through a lot of overs and a fair few wickets. Throw in a comical runout (which went our way), a stumping by Arjun which gave the V-C his customary 5 for 48 against Northwood- based teams (see the IVs, 15 May 2010), and we had bowled ‘em out for 154. Charlie was not flattered at all by his 4 for 77, as he deserved something more fitting to his unstinting efforts, even if 4 for 77 ain’t bad.
58 overs to get 155? Excellent, no pressure. Pete Leslie and Jez Graves took no chances against swing and seam on a difficult track. When Pete went for a positive 24 Jez was on 1; when Hilton was on 24 Jez was on 2; but this was Proper Cricket so no-one was complaining. Hilton, still hampered by a dodgy back, played some lovely shots and was looking set for a big one when he tamely chipped a full-toss to point for 37. See? The old rule applies.
Anyway Jez now had the measure of things and he and Alan Brook aka Alex Book played with more and more freedom. To be honest (always a good policy) the prospect of rain was the only threat to our serene progress, and the slow tempo of Northwood’s non-progress meant light might be a factor too. But as is so often the way, the end came quickly, with a succession of boundaries. Sgt Graves (56*) got his 50 in the nick of time, and AB (25*) got some very welcome runs and time in the middle.
All in all an excellent, positive performance, with proper early season conditions, for the L Team (Charlie and Steve) who had the nous to exploit those conditions to the full. 100 all out could have been on. There was excellent batting by the four batsmen who got in, and a senior league debut for Shoresy. He even sang his song (eventually!) Well done everyone!
