Cheshunt v Totteridge Millhillians Cricket Club 3rd XI on Sat 30 Apr 2011 at 1:00pm
Totteridge Millhillians Cricket Club Lost 14 points
Match report
TMCC III 206 all out (52.5 overs) Cheshunt 208-4 (39.3 overs)
14 points
The 3s came up against a good side on their own track, and can take consolation from 14 points and the emergence of Rakesh Venugopal as a top-class batsman. However they’ll have to improve to be a genuine force in Division 6 this year.
Pete Leslie and Jeremy Graves took guard after the Cheshunt skipper had no delays in putting us in. Two young seamers ran in hard and hit the deck, and the young side threw themselves around in the field energetically. Jez looked to be working it to the on side and was a mite surprised to be given out leg before, while Pete got on that kept a bit low and bowled him. Rakesh was promoted to 3 as Hilton was struggling with a bad back, and he looked totally at home from ball one – driving superbly through the covers and wristily late-cutting when given width. Hilton manfully hung around with him to consolidate, but was in too much pain to play as we know he can. Alex fell victim to the low bounce, but perhaps might have gone forward in an ideal world, having seen a lot of that low bounce. The partnerships that enabled us to post any sort of total came next, as Arjun threw everything at anything off line – his 30 hinted at a big one just around the corner. Jim dug in and sensibly waited for the ball to come to him, while keeping third man busy as the ball inexplicably found itself heading in that direction regularly. His 26 was invaluable in getting us into the points, and he kept Rakesh company as the man who looked so classy in the 4s last year went on imperiously, ultimately to 88. While Shahrukh’s bad trot continued, another low bounce victim, there was enough time for Stewie to show us his Gower-esque cover drive, and Charlie to biff a few over midwicket, and the aims of getting maximum batting points, and not allowing the home side any extra overs, were achieved – ominously Cheshunt seemed very satisfied with their work as we went in to tea.
The old firm of Charlie and Sharky took the old ball, which was soft, as we looked to exploit the low deck – but it took a change to the new ‘un, with a proud seam, to bring the breakthrough. Sharky’s legcutter that took the top of off was a beauty, worthy of any class of cricket. Nos 1 and 3 then proceeded to take the game away from us, however. The combination of left and right handers confused the attack - anything fractionally short was seized on and pulled or cut over the fast outfield, and though our ground fielding was excellent the game was inexorably being steered away from us. Steve and Arjun as change-ups had their moments, but it took Jez Graves to make the breakthroughs. Full and straight may be old-fashioned but it works as he bowled the leftie 3 and pinned the ‘gun’ 4 in front in the same over. Jim very graciously gave Steve some credit for running around to prevent a single and keeping the big new bat on strike, allowing Jez to concentrate on the new bat.
Briefly it looked like a new game as the older ball began to swing a bit, and the new batters didn’t look so assured. Steve’s idea of restraint (“WHAAAAT”) when denied a very very strong lbw shout might differ from MCC guidance, but gained his reward courtesy of a trademark legside stumping from Stewie. Numbers 1 and 2 in concert – rolling back the years?
However the young opener, who had carried on serenely, clipped it through mid-wicket a few more times to end the nonsense. Cheshunt, who won 14 games in Div 7 last year, will surely be there or thereabouts at the end of the season – the 3s will have to improve, in penetration with the ball, in more consistent contributions from the batsmen, and in body language, to be in the mix. But 14 points is something, and Rakesh was, well, something else.
