Totteridge Millhillians Cricket Club 4th XI v Ickleford II on Sat 13 Aug 2011 at 1:00pm
Totteridge Millhillians Cricket Club Lost by 6 wickets
Match report
Rowley Lane looked like a pudding, it smelled like a pudding and it played like a pudding. Chris just wishes he won the toss to take advantage. He didn’t and unfortunately this led to the 4s lowest score of the year. All out for 76, oh dear.
Kamlesh and Kris “I’m an ice hockey player now” Waters opened the batting but with the opposition skipper opening the bowling at the perfect pace and outswing for the track Kam was soon on his way back after an off-cutter removed his off-pole. Ketan managed just about to play himself in before he was done for by the same bowlers away swing edging on to slip. PK joined Kris who was feeling his way back into playing cricket shots and things were becalmed for a time but a change of bowling led to Kris being given out LBW far too swiftly followed by Chris who brainlessly swiped before even taking a look. PK hung around to pick up some welcome runs but picked the wrong time to throw the bat and was caught at backward point. Joe Wray in his first outing for the 4s was showing the older lags how to play a patient knock and wait for the right ball to strike playing the slow bowling particularly well. Milo was his usual tidy self tight in defence which brought about a bowling change with the opposition skipper taking a blow with handsome looking figures. The new bowler was an off-spinner with near on no run up but who still bowled with impressive accuracy. He first accounted for Milo who played a sweep a couple of hours early and was clean bowled, Waqas entered and played his usual solid hand down the order before he was also bowled and then Joe sensing he was batting with the tail charged the bowler but didn’t adjust to the shorter delivery. Veera received orders to play his shots as Chris’ mate Mike was now in (such was Chris’ confidence in him) and was caught at point and Roger got a first baller to complete the rout. It was undeniably a difficult track to bat on with the team bowling first having a definite advantage but as Joe showed us with a bit of patience we could have accumulated a winning total if enough of us had of knuckled down.
In the absence of a miracle it was clear that we just needed to get as many wickets / points as possible to try and salvage something from the day. Roger as we know makes the old ball talk and created a chance in his first over, this wasn’t taken so Roger made another one next ball which was thankfully, Chris taking a catch off a skier. Joe bowled with good pace on a pitch that was totally unresponsive for his back of a length style. Waqas come on to bowl some twirlers and collected a nice bowled. Roger got one to wobble right, left probably backwards before taking out middle stump and the Veera came on and got an LBW decision with a full straight missile. Had we of had any kind of total to defend things would have got interesting but 76 was all too easy to chase down.
So the relegation fight goes on and we will only come out on the right side if we bat sensible and to our potential. As a post script Kris’ batting may have been a little rusty but his keeping was top draw assisted possibly by his new past time of goal tending in division 12 of the Montreal Saracens Ice Hockey League.
