Boxmoor v Totteridge Millhillians Cricket Club 4th XI on Sat 30 Jul 2011 at 1:00pm
Totteridge Millhillians Cricket Club Lost by 76 runs
Match report
The pitch looked good and the outfield small, it was a toss to win and bat first particularly in the absence of our only genuine new ball bowler. Sadly Chris lost the toss and we were duly asked to field.
PK and Roger started us off but sadly PK having consumed two bottles of wine the night before struggled to find his radar which is a shame because when he did he beat the bat with lovely swing but unfortunately it was a little too infrequent. Roger manned up to his aversion to the new ball and made us all wonder what the bother was as he immediately hit a good length. PK was whisked off to contemplate his hangover and though Shahrukh was now on the field he could not bowl for another five overs and so Chris stepped up under the impression that he might be able to fill in with some seamers before the Shark became eligible to bowl. How wrong he was (see below figures) although in the world of blame culture that we live in Webby’s bowling shoes copped some stick from the Skipper. Chris was wearing said shoes otherwise it would be an extraordinary excuse. The opener who had been merrily swinging away tried again to go after a delivery from Roger which slid off the face of the bat to Kamlesh at point who took an excellent catch low down. It was one of those where a referral to the TV umpire would have been inconclusive and the benefit of doubt would go to the bat but the Div 7 is more retro than that so the bat asked Kam if he had caught it cleanly, Kam confirmed that and the opener graciously accepted his word and walked off. All very much in the spirit of things. Roger very quickly picked up a second when the left handed 3 got in a muddle with one that wobbled tried to leave and ended up padding it into his stumps. Thankfully now for the 4s Sharky was eligible to bowl and Chris was mercifully put out to stud. It’s been a while since the 4s had the pleasure of Sharky’s bowling and so he made up for lost time very quickly getting a real lifter to take the edge which was excellently held be Ketan on the rise. This brought in the opposition skipper who was looking good and striking the ball hard until Sharky talked him into trying to run a straight one down to third man but only succeeded in seeing his off-pole rattled. Cue expletives to himself as he trudged off. Rahul came on after drinks for a twirl and in his second over he induced a text book edge caught by Neil “Buckets” Dennison at first slip. Rahul was unlucky not to have a second as another edge dissected slip and keeper but after this the reprieved bat started hitting through the line on what was a good pitch. Chris replaced Rahul but by this time it was all about the predatory Shark at the other end. He removed their top scorer bowled, another wicket bowled and another... bowled and then Ketan broke the sequence and caught the last man. It goes without saying that he had bowled magnificently with good back up from Roger who was his ever reliable self. Unfortunately the opening overs had been expensive but the 4s had done well to come back from this to bowl the opposition out for 221 on a good deck with a lightening fast outfield and nick 10 of their overs in the process; so we were reasonably confident we could make a good fist of the chase. Hmm.
Unfortunately we lost Raf in the first over without troubling the scorers playing a very un-Raf like shot away from his body which was caught at second slip. Webby looked in reasonable order against the left handed spinner even managing a top-edged pull for six but he was disappointment to chip a drag down to the man at short cover departing for 8. Mitesh was in a started to club the spinner around the park for three consecutive boundaries which hastened his retirement from the attach. Kamlesh was angry at himself for cutting a wide one into gully’s hands and when Ketan gloved one off the new seamer at the other end the 4s were in desperate trouble. Mitesh had played excellently with all the carnage going on but got one that stuck in the pitch meaning he was through the shot early and with mid-off gobbling up the chance. PK and Neil were now in but Neil was roved caught behind. This brought Chris to the crease at with about 60 on the board with 6 down and things looking a touch embarrassing. Thankfully PK’s previous evenings wine ingestion did not inhibit his batting (though his running appeared to suffer) and he started to hit boundaries with regularity. Chris chipped in with a few boundaries himself before going back to the left arm spinner when he should have been forward (though the spinner himself was surprised on account of bowling one “that actually turned”). Shahrukh with his pecker up (or possibly dorsal fin) after all those wickets immediately hit the ground running and played himself in by smiting a couple of boundaries and him and PK formed the second fruitful lower order partnership that got us the solitary bating point. PK top scored for 45 before nicking one behind that was too close to his body to play with a horizontal bat, still he stood out in our batting line up and looked back to his best. Rahul and Roger both fell to the left arm spinner with Sharky not out after a good knock to add to his outstanding bowling display.
It was another, what could have been day for the 4s which leaves us not far off the relegation spots. It’s been said before this season but out batting needs radical improvement if we are going to secure safety this season.
