Totteridge Millhillians Cricket Club 4th XI v Southgate Adelaide II on Sat 23 Jul 2011 at 1:00pm
Totteridge Millhillians Cricket Club Won by 30 runs

Match report A good outing for the 4s this week meant a return to winning ways, a welcome feeling that we have not had for quite some time. Overnight rain meant that the Rowley Lane pitch had that tacky feeling which indicated batting would not be easy. With the notable exceptions of a few batsman from either side this .

The opposition skipper won the toss and inserted the 4s on the grounds that he had a better bowling side than batting, reasonable logic but it meant that if we got a score on the board then we’d fancy our chances of winning the game. Kamlesh and Phil two of the more experienced members of our side showed that even after years of playing cricket getting off the mark can be a tense affair almost causing a run out off the first ball of the match. The frenetic start continued when Kamlesh blasted one high in the air only for one of the younger opposition players to miss the catch which nearly caused the bowler a nervous breakdown. Phil was given out LBW and Krishan miscued one off a leading edge to mid-off. This brought in Sanjay who played the outstanding innings of the day and found some timing that eluded most other participants. As he raced along Vivek Chopra (the third of the breed) on debut came in after Kamlesh was LBW for a well made 22. He was able to play himself in and did so with a maturity beyond his young age. Sanjay was having a field day and raced past his fifty in a blink of an eye before he missed a sweep and was given LBW. Chris did not last long before edging one which was well held at slip. With the exception of a few lusty blows from Siva the tail did not really wag, Vivek fell for a brilliantly made 35 but for a team who usually can bat right down we were a little disappointed not to acquire the full batting points.

Still, from the evidence that we saw from out innings was timing was hard and with Roger opening the bowling we had the right man to exploit the conditions. That said, first blood went to Rahul at the other end bowling round the wicket to a left hander who inexplicably did not want the sight screen moved from the over the wicket position. He edged his first ball from round the wicket which was brilliantly held by Neil. This brought in the opposition skipper who after a bit of sparring with Roger chipped a dolly to Siva at short cover. Shot of the day went to their number 4 bat who pile drivered a decent length delivery from Rahul over long on for six, that was as good as it got though as Rahul’s come back dipped and landed flush on his toes leaving the umpire with little choice. Roger then took a huge wicket by getting the old ball hooping round the solid opening bats defence, he went for an excellent 45 but the 4s were now in the hunt. After Rahul’s excellent spell Chris had a whirl but he was talked into taking the new ball by Siva which as it turns out was an exceptional decision, so er, well done Chris. Siva bowled well and with good economy but the star of proceedings with Sanjay who we don’t normally associate as a new ball bowler but after this perhaps he should be. Sanj picked up the the important wicket of the number 5 who top scored with 53 and then collected an LBW. Siva took a blow which brought Rahul back on again on the advice of unofficial captain and Chris-botherer Siva, another master stroke from Benn as Rahul picked up a caught and bowled which left Sanj bowling at the tail. Sanjay bowled number 10 which took the 4s into yips territory with 9 down (having run out of overs on two previous occasions with the opposition 9 down). No problems on this occasion and Sanjay bowled the last man bringing a huge sigh of relief all round.

It was a good performance from the 4s who battled well in the field after a slightly below par batting display. That is bar one man who had wasn’t afraid to tell all concerned that there was simply no other contender for the man of the match award. Who are we to argue so that’s two jugs for Sanj for the 50 and the 5-for....
