Totteridge Millhillians Cricket Club 4th XI v Northchurch II on Sat 09 Jul 2011 at 1:00pm
Totteridge Millhillians Cricket Club Lost by 2 wickets
Match report
On winning the toss Chris chose to have a bat with newly available Raf accompanying Phil out to the middle. The oppositions opening bowler was a beefcake of an Aussie who had some serious pace and excellent accuracy. This ensured a circumspect opening stance which was entirely the right way to go about proceedings. The big man had been mostly up and down but out of the blue he got one to swing late which did for Phil beating him on the inside of the bat and crashing into his pads. Ketan came in at 3 and after a few lusty blows was caught off his gloves. Vivek got an absolute horror delivery first up and he could do little about the yorker that was zoning in on the base of the stumps which left Chris with little option to give the second LB of the day. All the damage had been done by the big Aussie and the 4s were now 35-3 and a little shell-shocked. Krishan came in to join Raf and the pair did a good job of rebuilding the innings helped by the opening bowler taking a blow. Krishan was particularly strong in executing backfoot crunches through the mid-wicket region from anything slightly short and so it was a real shame when he forgot the old adage about drinks and wickets when he departed for 25. Miles was looking good and was a little unlucky to see a low one dribble back off an inside edge to bowl him, PK was then out first ball playing a pretty brainless shot straight to the man at midoff. Chris was then run out by a proverbial country mile responding to a call that all concerned agreed was a touch rash (apologies were offered and accepted). Boom Boom went more Pop Pop today but had the distinction of not being caught at cow corner today instead opting for a strangle down the legside. We had barely 100 runs on the board at this stage and so it took a magnificent tenth wicket effort from Ollie Ridout and Raf who was still going to get us up to a total that at least we could work with. Ollie was steadfast in defence with Raf starting to ping boundaries with nonchalant ease including a sumptuous 6 into the “stands” (rosebush). The stand came to an end when Ollie misjudged a full one and was bowled and Roger trying out a new shot, the forward defensive, unfortunately spooned his first ball to cover and so he won’t making that mistake again.
Two ways to view this innings were that we actually did well to even get to 138 given there were 3 golden ducks and 1 needless run out but if you are a glass is half empty sort of a person ignore the doing well part and just focus on the fact that there were 3 golden ducks and 1 needless run out in our innings.
In the knowledge that the 2s have pulled off some “Lazarus” results at the Lane the 4s bowled and fielded with real purpose which brought about a run out in the second over. At one point Siva appeared as if he was going to try to beat the bat in a foot race to the crease despite the bat having a five meter head start and so we were all relieved when he decided to toss the ball to PK who did the necessary. The number 3 was a young fellow with excellent technique but was undone by Roger’s pix-and-mix of variations when he popped one up for Vivek at short cover to snaffle. Siva replaced PK at the other end and had their skipper given LBW off a slow looping short ball that the bat miscued going through the shot far too early. This brought in the big opening bowler who, as it turned out was a very competent batsman as well. This was the partnership that won the game with both players making well constructed 30s before Roger picked up his second when one of them slightly inexplicably try and hit one out the ground but succeeding only in losing his middle stump. The next man and was just as injudicious with his shot selection and was soon on his way back after picking out Chris at mid-off from Roger’s bowling. The new ball was taken and Vivek managed to get the breakthrough that we needed to make the finale interesting again by causing the big Aussie to chop on. The next man in looked pretty good too driving low and hard and another partnership developed edging the opposition ever closer to the low target. Just as the 4s were scratching their heads about the next breakthrough step up Ollie who had been bowling with beautiful pace and intent and was rewarded with two identical wickets in 2 balls bowl satisfying castling of middle stump which left the equation as 7 needed with 2 wickets in hand. Alas it was a false dawn and so try as we might we could not take the last two.
So despite the top effort in the field the 4s have racked up another loss on the back of a poor batting display with a couple of notable exceptions. This may be getting repetitive but without the necessary runs we are not going to be in a position to win games or even pick up decent batting points and so we need to sort it out. Quickly.
