Totteridge Millhillians Cricket Club 4th XI v Abbots Langley II on Sat 25 Jun 2011 at 1:00pm
Totteridge Millhillians Cricket Club Lost by 83 runs

Match report As with last week the 4s were lucky to get a game in this week given there was a large puddle on the square when the pitch was inspected at 8.30 in the morning. Some hard work from our star player, a tea towel meant that the game began just before the cut off time and was reduced to 42 - 36 overs per side.

Chris won another toss which was good news give the green damp pitch and the opposition were duly inserted. Siva and PK shared the new ball and it was good to see Siva regain some of last seasons potency beating the bat with some frequency. Despite this no breakthrough was forthcoming and so Rahul replaced PK to see if his tweakers would do the job. Roger replaced Siva at the other end and immediately picked up a caught and bowled off a full toss that caught the toe end of their skippers bat. The other opener after a circumspect start began to open his arms and played some confident shots down the ground, he top scored for them with 45 before Roger talked him into one drive too many that looped of the outside edge to Kamlesh at cover. With the pitch still damp and sticky it was hard work for Rahul’s off-breaks and so Sanj was brought into the attack to bowl his, well, whatever they are. He picked up his first which was brilliantly held by Neil in the gully and then he bowled the number 4. With the reduced overs the oppositions tactic was to attack which meant a combination of boundaries and half chances offered up. Roger collected a further two wickets with a chip down the ground caught by Chris and then a clean bowled. We then ran someone out (please can the executioner come forward and own up as I can’t remember and you need to be given credit) before Roger collected his thoroughly deserved five for with an unbelievably plumb LBW catching the bat on the toes going back. For good measure Rog picked up a sixth wicket caught by Sanj at point before the 10th wicket fell with another run out (er, can this person also please come forward as well, brain fade has struck again). The reduced overs made it an unusual innings and credit must be given to the opposition who batted positively throughout. For our part the fielding was of a high standard and we kept going to make sure we got all of the bowling points that were on offer and most importantly we kept our heads up in the overs where not a lot was happening for us. Roger once again was the pick of our bowlers and he was well backed up by the others.

187 in 37 overs (having nicked one of the oppos) was a steep total on a pitch that had dried a little. We started brightly enough but unfortunately Kamlesh was a little over eager to tuck into their slow swing bowler and ended missing everything. Phil then was cleaned up by the other opener who was strong quick accurate pace bowler. Ketan couldn’t carry on his good recent run of form and when Sanj was also bowled by the quicky we were in real dire straits. PK added some respectability to the top, middle order especially after Chris had come and gone done by the quick Milo hung around and survived a couple of nasty (if accidental) beamers which earned the quick bowler a warning and an end to his days work. Once PK had departed Neil came in and provided the highlight of the 4s batting display with some brutal hitting. Denzil was striking the ball right out the middle and having seen the field pushed back he opted to take them out the equation by going right over the top, marvellous stuff. Evidently he was having so much fun he elected not to play a shot at a full straight delivery which with hindsight was a bad call. Nevertheless it was the high point of an otherwise rather dismal scorecard. Boom Boom you will be surprised to learn holed out trying to win the match by getting our run rate up to 10 an over for the final 12 overs which left Rahul and Roger in at 10 and 11. With the field circling like vultures Roger thought he saw an opportunity for some runs by hitting a short wide one hard but somehow short cover showing considerable bravery plucked the boundary destined shot out of the air to seal the win.

If this were a school report it would read did not bat well enough. It is not, it is a match report which also reads did not bat well enough and so let us hope that we can get back on track next week and bat in a manner that befits the rest of our play which is in the right place at the moment.
