Radlett IV v Totteridge Millhillians Cricket Club 4th XI on Sat 04 Jun 2011 at 1:00pm
Totteridge Millhillians Cricket Club Lost by 109 Runs
Match report
Another week and unfortunately for the 4s another indifferent performance with the bat meant we racked up another heavy loss and this time there was no pitch to blame just a combination of what we like to call in the business scoreboard pressure and a redoubtable bowling performance from a very handy left arm seamer.
In a reversal of last season Chris has begun an unwelcome habit of loosing tosses he wants to win and vice versa. It was a hot day and the pitch looked good despite a tinge of green but the decision was taken out of his hands as the opposition elected to bat. Veera as is his way immediately hit the ground running and almost got the opener to chop on in his first over the ball bouncing agonisingly over the stumps. PK unfortunately was a little out of sorts and was hit for six in his first over with the bat picking up a full toss off his thigh sending it sailing over the fine leg rope. Matters weren’t helped when we dropped the other guy once PK had switched to round the wicket. There were more aggressive shots from both openers but thankfully Sanjay had the presence of mind and quick reactions to fire the ball into Ketan behind the pegs after an ill judged single was called. The score moved pretty briskly forward with the opposition on about 85-1 from 15 overs. A double bowling change brought Roger and Sanjay into the attack and both bowled extremely well to reign back in the run rate which was threatening to get out of hand. Sanj was first up with Ketan taking an excellent caught behind of a thin edge and then he clean bowled the number 3. Roger had a fellow caught at square leg by Veera and at this point the 4s were right back in it having slowed the rate right down and taken some top order wickets to boot. Roger then had the oppositions left handed swing-merchant caught in the deep with Chris taking a well judged steepler. Unfortunately the oppositions skipper found his eye during the next passage of play and really punished us. During a less than distinguished spell Chris almost turned his back on a rank half-tracker assuming it would be deposited somewhere onto the main ground only to be shocked to find the ball on a trajectory past his left arm. His reactions were good enough to stop the ball but not to cling on. Some form of lesson for youngsters along the lines of if you do chuck down a pie remember a batsman might get so excited they’ll smash it straight back at ya. In the last 10 overs a couple of run outs to Siva and Chris got us a few more bowling points but the opposition clearly happy with their days work declared in at the end of the 51st over.
243 was a tall order but we had a short batsman in Mike “Webbevitch” Webb debuting this week thanks to him being on half-term. Siva having competently got us off to fliers in the last few matches this week fell short caught at slip off the back of his bat which may well signal the end of his opening career as a bat and a move back to being an opening bowler. Ketan was in at 3 and after a few sighters started to thrash the opening bowler back over his head three times in an over followed by a half-deliberate steer through the slips to add insult. The other opening bowler managed to injure his side midway through an over and gave way to the oppositions stand out bowler, a Zaheer Khan clone who bowled at a reasonable lick sowing the seeds of doubt in the right handed bats minds. He removed Webby with an excellent delivery that took the outside edge. He then convinced Sanjay into attempting a pull a little early in his innings and was caught looping one to square leg. Ketan who top scored on the day was next in line and fell to an identical ball to Webby. We were relieved to see the back of him for a while as the opposition skipper came on to bowl some offies. Krishan and Kamlesh were at the crease now and brought about some order before Kamlesh was bowled for 15. PK then had a handy partnership with Krishan who looked like his season is turning a corner towards some good form. After doing the hard bit he was then caught plumb in front. Milo as always looked great but faced with the oppositions overseas Aussie - a mystery bowler if ever there was one given the sheer amount of variations (including an assortment of full tosses) - he tried to cut one that was too close and on to him a little quick. PK at the other end played a typical PK innings and, totally undaunted by the men lurking at long on and off, smashed the off-spinner back over his head for six. He was soon bowled thereafter and Chris then fell victim to the mystery bowler who gave him the old one two of full toss at his nose (dispatched) followed by length ball (indeterminately chipped to long on). Roger and Veera were the last pair and provided an entertaining partnership with some textbook shots from Veera who was the only person who came to terms with their left arm seamer and some very untextbook shots from Roger which were equally as impressive. Sadly we got within 6 runs of a batting point when Roger was clean bowled.
Whilst no time to get disheartened - the opposition were a very decent side - some reflection is called for to get the batting sorted out otherwise life in division 7 will get a whole lot harder for the 4s. On the positive side the HCPL game that was taking place on the main ground resulted in one side 91 all out chasing 301 making our 100+ run defeat look like a right result.
