Totteridge Millhillians Cricket Club 4th XI v Tewin on Sat 14 May 2011 at 1:00pm

Match report With the normal skipper unable to play, Kam was handed the mantle this week against Tewin to captain the side at Rowley Lane. With the clouds gathering prior to the match, was this an ominous sign? Fortunately the weather held fair, if not chilly through the day. The track was green, fairly firm with the ball perhaps not coming on as much. So having won the toss, Tewin were put into bat. The thinking is perhaps TM’s could chase rather then defend.

Veeru and Shive opened as normal and early breakthrough by Veeru bowling out their left handed gave rise and hope. However, their number 3 came and started striking the ball with great fluidity, and the runs started to flow, and within ten over the score was a massive 70 odd. Oops, were TM’s looking at chasing the 300?? With both bowlers not comfortable with their respective ends, they swapped and this paid off as Verru then got another. Number 3 and 4 then continued hitting fours and a regular basis. Some chancy shots gave us catches that were difficult, or dropped. Not daunted by this, 3 & 4 continued their clattering and the score just racing away. With Shive not getting and rhythm in his bowling, Milo was brought in. Both Verru and Milo then had a long spells, which reigned in the runs and field shuffles meant number 3 was getting frustrated and he eventually drove on to Kam at mid-off. As the other batsmen followed and looking equally comfortable and a platform of runs building on a regular basis, but singles being taken rather than fours help some optimism. Veeru was replaced by Sanjay and a gallant spell brought him a few wickets, with one being a dolly drop. Sanjay was bowling with a side strain from last weeks game and manfully carried on. Milo continued his impressive bowling swinging the ball in the windy conditions and despite a few strong lb shouts wasn’t his day to get wickets. Rahul came on and in tandem with Sanjay kept the scoring down to a more respectable level. Tewin seemed to have a strong batting side and having put 260 on the board in the 47th over, surprisingly declared, in time for tea. Phew! This meant TM’s could potentially bat the 53 overs. A quick tea and Mike and Ketan opened. The oppo kept the old ball and opened with two slow bowlers. First ball disaster as Mike misplayed a straight ball that didn’t bounce and was given LB. This brought in Mitesh playing his first game for the 4’s. From ball one he looked comfortable. The opening bowlers continued to toss the ball up and tempting us to hit out. Kets fell for that and skied after hitting a few lusty blows and looking set. In went Krish and one lovely on drive and four. He also fell for the dibbly dobbly and in went Sanj, with the score moving along now rapidly. Mitesh and Sanj played a brilliant innings and Sanj raced to his second fifty, despite playing in some pain and using the magic cold spray on his pulled muscles. Mitesh continued in elegant form and we were now looking at victory. But on temptation too many and Sanj was bowled. Shive was sent in to quicken the score and Kam hoping for a quick fire 30-40 might have given a sight of victory. Shive then played some lovely shots, the field spread out and for once Shive restricted himself and played with sense and duty. However he skied one that held up in the wind and out. Neil went in and as in earlier matches asked to support Mitesh, who having passed 50, and then started to hasten the pace and looking to increase the run rate. A leg side ball and Neil gave it a mighty whack but only to square leg. Kam went in by this time Mitesh was nearing the 90’s and the plan was to let him have as much strike as possible as both looked to the possibility of an outside victory despite needing 7-8 an over…. Mitesh continued looking for the boundaries however he skied on straight behind the bowler falling 6 short of the magic 100. The oppo delighted and Kam and Rahul then just played the overs through, with hitting some loose deliveries despite the cluster of fielders around the bat. This meant we ended up with 220 for 7. What a match and come back and from what looked like a no win situation, we drew…and almost won. Now that would have been some victory. But hats of to first the oppo, who were really a thoroughly decent and sporting side. Some good bowling that reigned in the run flows, excellent keeping by Mike and of course sterling batting from Mitesh and Sajay.
