London Colney v Totteridge Millhillians Cricket Club 2nd XI on Sat 03 Sep 2011 at 12:30pm
Totteridge Millhillians Cricket Club Won by 118 runs

Match report 2s end on a high...

Final match of the season and to be completely safe, TMs needed 3 points whilst London Colney needed 15 to avoid relegation.

The toss was irrelevant as LC were looking to chase and we, to defend (far easier under SHCL rules to get the 3 points that way), anyway LC won the toss and inserted us in.

With a reshuffled batting order and a team with 9 confirmed on Fri evening ( final 11 at 11.30am sat!!), the TMs started hesitantly against a good seam attack and although not losing a wicket, could only post 35-0 after 15 overs. Dani departed in the 16th over after scoring 17 and No 3 Amir followed soon after, however it was the departure of player of the season M.R Warsi for 33 that precipitated a little panic, leaving the TMs on 99-5 after 36 overs.

At this point the sorely missed Abhilash Matthew (81*), playing only his 5th game of the season entered the fray to join the skipper, Rizwan Siddiqui (61*). These two slowly, painfully, set about restoring the innings.

At 119-5 at the end of the 42nd , the set pair then set about the LC attack with relish and over 100 runs followed in the last 10 overs of the innings without a chance being offered, this despite the boundary being crossed and cleared regularly.

LC were clearly deflated after the unbeaten 7th wicket partnership of 122 and realised that they had to chase 222 in 47 overs to have any chance of avoiding relegation as bonus bowling points were now out of the equation.

Rizwan decided to retain the old ball and start with spin , a tactic that a couple of times had not worked before but this time worked wonderfully well as LC were clearly perplexed by the skill of Arun and Warsi who picked up 3 wickets in the first 15 overs.

Safraz and Hassan Ali then chipped in with a wicket apiece before the new ball was taken in the 27th over resulting in Waqar Ali and Amir Khan demolishing the tail (all 5 wickets clean bowled)in the space of seven overs. LC were thus doomed to Division 4 having failed to pick a single point and the TMs safe and snug in the middle of the table.

So the season ends with a big 'What if'.....started so well....in the promotion places having won 4 out 5 fixtures...then the heavens opened and we lost 4 games in 5 consecutive weeks to the rain picking up 40 out of a possible 120 points. Thereafter a loss of momentum and personnel (particularly Noman, Matt C and Selvam) meant that the early season promise fizzled out and we rather limped along in the home stretch.

Anyway, my thanks to all those who have played in the 2s this season (special mention for the good efforts of Rob McDougall, Waqar Ali, Selvam R, Arun M and the few times they were around Noz, Matt C and AB)....hope you enjoyed the experience and I look forward to meeting up again in winter nets/next season.
