Match report Rain rain go away..!!

For the 5th time this season (in 17 - almost 1/3 of our fixtures)rain affected a match once more, to leave the 2s scrambling for points with just 34 overs to bat after Southgate Adelaide put up 226-6 in their maximum allotted 40 overs.

Having won the toss Rizwan elected to field, despite the track looking good for batting, given recent successes in chasing and the overcast conditions.

A steady start by SA meant that after 14 overs they were 58-0. There then followed a 90 min rain break which almost ended the match. However the willingness of both captains to get it back on , along with good covers and the knowledge that many other games would be called off - meant that SA had 26 overs and 10 wickets in hand to have a real go - they did just that..and then some!

At 180-0 in the 28th, a wet ball (disappearing to all parts) neither seaming nor swinging and some lacklustre fielding, the TMs were looking down the barrel.

However with Safraz being brought on and the reintroduction of Nozmul, the tide turned with the latter removing both openers (in their 80s) in the space of 4 balls. The theme of tight , incisive bowling continued until the 40th as the pair took 6 wickets for 46 runs in 12 overs - a superlative effort which gave the TMs a glimmer of an unlikely 227 chase in 34 ov.

With a re-jigging of the batting order, the plan was for Will to anchor a run chase around the biffing of Simon, Waqar, Riz, Hassan and Nozmul, however a loose drive meant that Will departed in the 2nd over and it was Simon and Waqar who were left to take up the challenge.

A 40 run partnership at around 6 per over ended when the new ball was taken in the 12th over and the introduction of a young speedster who did for Simon.

Rizwan (53) and Waqar (71), more used to bowling in tandem, then took the attack to SA and began to set a base from which a realistic tilt at the 227 target could be made. A blistering 100 run partnership in 13 overs meant that the TMs needed 81 off 9 overs with two set batsmen at the crease.

However disaster struck with the removal of Waqar for a brutal 71, unfortunately this began a procession of wickets for the TMs (quel surprise)as first the 227, then the 200 (10 batting points)run targets both slipped away as the overs ran out.

With a mid table finish once more beckoning , there was disappointment in the dressing room, however as we are now up to 36 players representing the 2s in 2011 , the pain can be shared and sufficiently diluted all around.
