Match report Selvam's heroics....close but no cigar

TM2s unbeaten run came to an end at Eversholt by the agonising margin of 1 wicket despite a mammoth effort to rescue victory from the jaws of defeat by Selvam Ramasamy who managed the all rounder's dream of a 5 wicket haul allied to a half century.

A grassy deck, overcast and windy conditions ...the Eversholt skipper had no hesitation in putting the TMs into bat upon winning the toss and despite a stronger than usual batting line up, the top order collapsed in a pathetic heap to leave the TMs broken at 14-5 in the 12th over. Most disappointing was the fact that although the bowling was decent, it was poor shot selection and an inability to rotate the strike that cost the TMs the most.

Interesting to note that from the first over of the match the opposition made constant references to last year's match report for the same fixture...

....one cannot imagine why but this seemed to fire them up more and despite the score, brought some light relief to the TMs.

Back to the game....with the innings in tatters and a real danger of being skittled for less than 50, Hassan Ali and Arjun Chopra began to light the fires of recovery for the TMs. The torch of resurrection was then carried by Rizwan and Selvam who came together at 50-8 and slowly but surely compiled an 87 run partnership with the latter leading the way. Rizwan was happy to play second fiddle to a brilliant half century from Selvam who regularly found the boundary and was especially brutal to anything bowled on his pads.

As the pair were on their way to the batting points, Selvam mistimed a drive and was caught in the deep and the next over Rizwan fell lbw and the innings finally closed on 139.

As regular readers of these reports would know, the TM2s believe this to be a defendable total and so it was with some confidence and relief that the TMs took to the field with some runs on the board.

The first over was bowled by Selvam and with Rizwan stationing himself at short cover the pair contrived to remove the opposition skipper with the second ball of the innings.

Selvam continued the good work and with Rizwan also taking a wicket the pair began to cause real problems for the hosts. However with the game tilting in the TMs balance at 57-5 we then somehow managed to put down two absolute sitters offered by Fuller who went on to top score for Eversholt with 37.

When Fuller was finally dismissed by a run out, the score was 113-7 and it was time for Selvam to return to the action. Straight away he picked up where he left off and with Rizwan keeping the other end locked down, Selvam struck twice to leave the oppo on 128-9 and the TMs on the brink of another 'Lazarus'.

However, it was not to be...despite playing and missing several times , the Eversholt 10th wicket pair managed to reach their target , even when one run short the TMs still managed 3 maiden overs and it was not until the 43rd over that the match finally ended.

So the TM2s tasted defeat for the first time this season however despite no batting points the picking up of 9 bowling points means that although we are mid table we are only 21 points off the top. Hopefully lessons will be learnt from this ....onwards and upwards lads.
