Totteridge Millhillians Cricket Club 2nd XI v Old Albanian on Sat 21 May 2011 at 1:00pm
Totteridge Millhillians Cricket Club Won by 3 wickets

Match report Apocalypse not now....

...doomsday prophet Harold Camping had predicted the world would end at 6pm on Saturday...what materialised around that time was nearly just as miraculous. The TM2s completed a successful run chase.

Having done a little research on the Old Albanians and discovered that they had an average total innings score of 100 since the beginning of the season, the 2s think tank came up with a cunning plan. Despite not having chased successfully since the last 'end of the world' prediction in 2000 (some dramatic licence may have been taken for effect)the unthinkable was being thunk...if toss won...stick em in and chase.

With the toss won, the master plan for world domination was put into effect , however the OAs had their own little surprise, bore the pants off the opposition and then launch a counterstrike in the last 20 whilst they were sleeping. Part A of our plan didn't quite work as the OAs millimetered their way to 59-0 off 26 overs. The incredible/incredulous run rate of 2 was continued after drinks but at the fall of the first wicket, in the 38th over no less, the gas was finally applied and the visitors fairly motored along (helped by several dropped catches)to a final run rate of less than 4, closing on 210-8 in 53 overs. Selvam and Saf being the pick of the attack, bowling economically and grabbing a brace each.

With the oppo getting 20-30 more then expected the think tank then sent out another memo;

..have tea..open with a couple of guns .. stop.

Nozmul Hussain and Shahid Ali (a sat 10.30am replacement for an unwell Haris Ali)were sent in and duly repaid the faith placed in them by blasting 50 within 5 overs. Nozmul in particular played an outstanding, rapid cameo of 40 and added real impetus to the chase.

With the run rate around 4 and the way the TM2s bat, the overs were never really a concern, we knew that if wickets were in hand , we would win. Well we've always known that but keeping those darn wickets in hand was always our problem.

Safraz Ahmed buoyant after his bowling performance continued his good work by holding the innings together and eventually seeing us home with 3 wickets and 7 overs to spare whilst finishing unbeaten on 41. A genuine man of the match performance.

So, no divine zooming off skywards for anyone at the Rowley on May 21 2011 but certainly some satisfied TM'ers who managed to get a particularly irksome monkey off their back. Yes we can chase and if we want to make an impact on Div 3 this season... we'll have to do it some more.
