Match report
Letchworth drop anchor to deny TMs
TMs first away assignment and a 30 mile trek up the A1 to one of the better wickets in the Hertfordshire league at Whitehorn Lane. Winning the toss Riz had no hesitation in batting on what looked like an absolute road.
The TMs began shakily and the top three of Aniket, Abhilash and PK were back in the hutch with just 40 on the board. Enter Saf (54) and Haris Ali (71), with the former in particular under pressure to recapture past glories. The pair began cautiously but soon the full repertoire was on show from both and they moved within 5 runs of a century partnership before the old failings rose to the fore.
First Haris Ali fell charging down the wicket, followed by Saf in similar fashion and despite useful contributions from Hassan Ali (20)the tail surrendered meekly and it was only a quick barrage of boundaries from Rizwan (18 n.o.)that led to a total of 204.....and the record for this particular week....9 out of 10 dismissals being catches with all but two from poor shot selection.
Feeling they were about 20-30 runs light the TMs were determined to get at the Letchworth top order and Selvam (10-2-48-2) duly obliged by removing both openers cheaply. From the other end Noman (22-5-44-1) bowled a fiery spell with absolutely no luck and it was his replacement, Yasir Khan, who benefited with a loose shot from his first ball leading to a wicket.
A small partnership then ensued but after drinks at 26 overs, a triple strike by the TMs left the home team reeling on 80-6. A couple of airy shots fell agonisingly into the gaps and with close in fields, Letchworh rode their luck to reach 123-6 in the 38th over.
At this point the opposition skipper decided that with the 8th wicket partnership set at the crease, the TMs running out of options,4 wickets in hand, a pancake of a wicket and around a run a ball required....he would signal his batsman to go for the w.........erm draw. *&%$**!!!!
With Noman and his pace being the only real danger to the opposition on this track and with the old ball, the overs ticked by and eventually the life was squeezed out of the game and the draw was finally reached in the 51st with Letchworth creeping upto 4 bonus batting points and a total of 14, the TMs ending on 16.
Still bemused by the oppositions tactics the TMs reflected on a timely return to form of Saf and Haris Ali and the sustained excellence(and incredible stamina)of Nomi who bowled 22 overs at full tilt.
