Costa Del Sol XI v Totteridge Millhillians Cricket Club Tour XI on Sun 10 Apr 2011 at 13:00
Totteridge Millhillians Cricket Club Won by 6 wkts
Match report
A great end to the tour, this.
Having won an important toss, Vish ensured we would at least get one full workout in the field on tour, and we were able to make amends for the previous day's errors, with the very notable exception of catching. The bowlers bowled beautifully, with special mention to Messrs Butler, Lyall and Bhimjayani - supported well by a combination of Oli Ridout, Andrew Shoreman, James Hutcheson and even some leggie-tastic rippers from Pete Leslie. The ground fielding was largely superb, with Fielder-of-the-Tour Andrew Shoreman leading the way.
The tour did consistently show us up in one area, and that was taking catches. With just two held and perhaps 10? 12? 15? more? put down across the two days, we were fortunate that our bowling managed to restrict their batsmen to 178.
Notable moments of ridicule included Alex literally beating the ground in anger having dropped a skier and Steve winning 'Champagne Moment' for ending up in the 'Winnie-the-Pooh' position on the floor after a comically failed catch attempt.
All kinds of bizarre goings-on littered the innings, including a top order batsman standing his ground after a massive nick off Andrew (on a Tour match - tut tut), a not out for a run out by over a foot, and the same batsman then somehow claiming his right to a runner for shortness of breath!
But we made it off the pitch in real contention.
With Pete Leslie teeing off from the top of the order, playing some magnificent smashes all around the wicket, we were ahead of the rate early on. But from a solid base, a decision which somehow awarded an LBW to a right armer bowling from around the wicket, on a day with no swing or spin, allowed them back into the game. Things settled down once Neil Dennison and Jim Hutcheson came together, but with a perilously long tail and a rate of 6+ for the final 10-12 overs, we were far from home.
That all changed when Jim decided to open up, and on a true artificial surface everything went his way, the ball despatched to all parts of the ground. Neil supported him well and the pair left the opposition shaking their heads with disappointment in the 31st over. In a game that had - after some pretty average spirit shown by the hosts - become all about the result, it was an absolutely fabulous win.
Well done boys!
