Hampstead v Totteridge Millhillians Cricket Club Ladies XI on Sun 27 Jun 2010 at
Totteridge Millhillians Cricket Club Lost

Match report Thankfully due to Englands only win of the World Cup on Wednesday, our game was shortened to 20 overs and held at the earlier time of 11am so we could all rush back to watch Englands only loss of the World Cup, on the hottest day of 2010! TMCC won the toss and bearing in mind that two of our top order were absent, opted to bat with view of defending out total with our strong bowling attack. A new coupling at the crease saw Emma W and Ciara open and in the face of good line and length from the openers had to work hard to build an innings, which in the heat did not look fun. Emma W was the first to fall, after she was just getting into her stride with a couple of boundarys, to a LBW. Ciara held up with Tolly, who scored an excellent 4 just off point, before being dismissed with a direct bowl. This made way for Mama Caz (top scorer of the day!) who couldn’t wait to get her left hand mitts on all the stray balls and packed them off to leg side in a series of boundaries. Ellie came in on Ciara’s exit and too joined in the big hit party. The innings ended with Pat and Aileen on not out and an acceptable 89 runs.

Hampstead opened their innings with their previous captain Becca, who we all knew was very capable with the bat. Alice, our 14 year old wonder express engine, made her debut with a near maiden opening spell (a no ball when the run up just wasn’t quite accurate prevented the big M in the score book), keeping Hampstead on their toes. Caz took the other end, but after running hard in the heat did not feel her normal mojo and asked to be replaced by Aileen after two overs. Aileen kept it tight and patiently waited for the wicket to come, which it did with a nice clean bowl taking out number 2 batsman. Alice bowled her full overs and was alas denied a wicket, but altogether had an very good spell with only 17 runs spared (a couple of these were no balls, so once we get the run up sorted she’ll be a demon). Bushra took over and after a couple of wides, decided to bowl around the wicket – a wise decision, as the ball swung like a good’un keeping the runs low. The highlight was the dismissal of Becca, when Bushra sent middle stump flying with a clean bowl. Skip took over from Aileen, but the arm was loose and a few wides escaped before taking out Imelda Staunton’s daughter for a duck. Unfortunately despite the spate of wickets, it was too late to salvage the game as the runs were made by the 17th over.

It was a good game, but we missed our normal top order and the total was just not big enough against Hampstead’s batting attack despite reactive fielding and great bowling.
