Totteridge Millhillians Cricket Club Ladies XI v Underhill on Sun 06 Jun 2010 at 1:30pm
Totteridge Millhillians Cricket Club Lost Underhill won by 3 runs

Match report A very positive match, just not with the ending it was meant to have. TM's won the toss and elected to bat. Despite a couple of early wickets, the runs came quick and fast with Emma top scoring on 39 runs. Julie and Aileen finished off the innings impressively, running on every bye (did I spell that right or should it be 'by')and dropping them into the abdoned close cover and mid-wicket gaps or hitting though and over the loose ring of fielders. We ended the 25 overs with a healthy 153-3 and were begining to hope that this would be our first win.

We took to the field after rehydrating and aware of the MCC county player lurking in the Underhill ranks saved our normal opening bowlers for the middle order. Zoe and Emma both had good spells keeping the runs down and taking two early wickets, with an excellent catch from Tolly the Trolley in the covers. The fielding was excellent and the opposition were remaining comfortably behind the run rate. Unfortunately for us, they were all too aware of this and the county player they had placed at 7 was swiftly promoted to 5 at the fall of the fourth wicket from a lovely run out by Aileen. She came in the 19th over and basicly treated the match as a practice ground for her drive, her pull shot, her cut and her ability to quash the expectation of team that had sweated in the field and on the wicket for three hours, but unfortunately were not county level bowlers. We could only look on in dismay as she hit the balls over the boundry and through the gaps that could only be covered with a team the population size of China. However, we entered the final over covering our boundaries and leaving Emma W and Tolly in for the singles (in the vaque hope she might choose a single rather than a boundary). Aileen was at the bowling crease and we all prayed for a last minute wicket. They needed 7 to win (which against normal league standard would have been completely do-able). First ball went for 4, but then our hopes were raised by a dot ball, dashed again by a two and finished with a 4.

It was a truly galling end to a game that we had commanded right up until the last fifth of the game, but we had no chance against the skills of a top order MCC batswoman. There will be strong talks at the next league meeting about the eligibilty of players in our league, but until then we are leaving with the positives - great batting, great fielding and great bowling from the TM fillies!
