Totteridge Millhillians Cricket Club Sunday XI v Clifton CC on Sun 23 May 2010 at 2:00pm
Totteridge Millhillians Cricket Club Won by 8 wickets
Match report
When it was discovered on the Saturday morning, that our planned opponents, the Casual Nomads had in fact folded a year ago, swift action had to be taken. Thanks to a great little website, I was able to find, seemingly the one side in the whole of the country wanting an away fixture. Telephone calls were made, plans hatched and Cifton CC of Essex had agreed to fill our 'vacancy'.
Unfortunately, at such late notice, some of their players had committed elsewhere. They were not strong, but on one of the best days of the year so far, weather wise, we were just happy to have a game.
The game was very one sided. They had no luck and found us in good form, with Mr. Wernham looking especially sharp behind the stumps. Rahul Bhatnagar bowled a great line to collect a four-for and for the last 12 overs, the skipper and Mr. Dearing had to stick to a plan of bowling tight without getting wickets because tea wasn't ready. (You don't get that in a league game!!)
Eventually Clifton finished on 153-8 off their 40.
This should never have been enough, but the skipper gave a closed door lecture to his side before tea, to ensure game heads were on when we came to bat.
He need not have worried, as despite losing our gifted keeper without him troubling the scorers, Arun and P.K batted excellently to both record their top scores for the club. On losing P.K, it was left to the awesome 'Wellington bomber' to play a cameo and he showed pure class and exceptional timing as he scored 28* off just 21 balls to seal the victory with over 20 overs to spare.
A very easy win for us, but we were all massively thankful to Clifton for saving the day. They were a great bunch and will be invited back at a time when they can bring their full side and we can ask a few of our 'big guns' to sit out.
