Eastcote v Totteridge Millhillians Cricket Club Sunday XI on Mon 03 May 2010 at 1:00pm
Totteridge Millhillians Cricket Club Won by 54 runs
Match report
Well this was an odd one: TWO away teams turned up at ex-OMCC ground Headstone Lane on Bank Holiday Monday, which as we all know is probably one too many. A few scratched heads and bemused comments later, the home team (Harrow St Mary's) looked up at the overcast, drizzly sky and decided that they would be content to play the accommodating host, rather than any cricket.
So we ended up playing Middlesex league team Eastcote instead, as the Harrow players propped up the bar and laughed as the players on the pitch shivered their way through the first innings. The good news was that all but two of the players on the pitch were from Eastcote, TMCC having won an invaluable toss and opted to try to stay warm and dry.
Jeremy Book opened with new boy Mani, and quickly got into his stride. He often gets good-looking starts but then loses concentration - not today. He smashed the ball all over the park, and as wickets started to fall around him he just played his own game, at one point having scored 50 out of a total of 70. Sadly he hammered a drive straight back at the bowler just as it looked like he might be about to make a dash for three figures, but it set the innings up beautifully.
Prakash 'PK' Kannan then took up the mantle alongside Rahil, both adding useful thirties, and the innings finished with the timeless Phil Ridout pushing the ball around, ably supported by Rahul.
Over tea the main debate was just how many layers it was feasible to wear, and several TMCC players took to the field in two pairs of trousers and at least 5 tops of various thicknesses, colours and appropriateness (the less said about Hutch's beanie the better). It must be said that the weather then basically cleared up and fielding in the second innings was decidedly more enjoyable than the poor Eastcote players experienced in the first! Crucial toss indeed.
Atif and Siva started well, with Atif causing all sorts of problems - though sadly mostly with no-balls. The first ball faced by their number 2 shattered the wicket but didn't count, and it turned out to be the first of approximately 6 chances survived by that particular batsman. He ended up posting a slogged 50, but quite how he survived so long isn't really clear to any of us.
Fortunately in this case catches didn't win (or lose) matches, and by the time Arun finally had him well caught at mid-wicket by Rahul, Eastcote had lost several wickets. They were still scoring quickly however, and their more correct middle order started to strike the ball well - by the halfway stage they were only marginally behind the rate, and with space left available to them in the field it was looking like being a close game.
But Rahil kept it tight whilst Arun, Rahul and then PK bowled tidily, Arun in particular taking his usual well-deserved haul. Special mention goes - again - to fill-in keeper Hutch, who snaffled not only a tidy little stumping but also a caught-behind whilst standing up to PK's medium pace. Stewie Wernham watch out.
TMCC posted an easy win in the end, may have found ourselves a new Sunday fixture against Eastcote (who, I imagine, will bring a pretty strong team to avenge this defeat), and we might even get a game against Harrow St Mary's on the next Bank Holiday Monday instead....
