Match report
TMCC's 2010 campaign off with a win....
On a gloriously warm sunny day with not a volcanic ash cloud (or plane) in sight, TMCC kicked off their 2010 season with a win (in a 40 over match) against Fives and Heronians , who are based in the Essex League with their 1st X1 in Div 1.
Leading a mixed team with reps from all four Sat X1s,captain for the day Rizwan Siddiqui had no hesitation in opting to bat on a decent pre-season track and sent Asif to open the innings with Sarfaraz.
Asif went on to score a sublime half century aided wonderfully by a typically pugnacious 45 from Haris Ali ( the artist formerly known as Javed) Soomro and a maiden 50 on debut from newbie Mohammed Hafeez. Lusty lower order bashing, more at home in the IPL rather than the MCC handbook from Jahinger and Imran K resulted in a strong finish leaving us 238-5 off our 40 overs.
Harish warned us about their opener who is their 1st X1 captain and true to form the lad took our new ball pair apart, seam clearly was not working and a double change was made in the 9th (with the score on 81-0) with spinners Arun M and Imran K entering the fray.
Some may call it an inspired change, others desperation but hey, it worked!!
First ball, Imran picks up their skipper with a loopy full toss(apparently 'they all count son') and thereafter the pair bowled excellently in tandem to bring the run rate down, at the half way stage F&H needed a very attainable 110 off 20 overs with 8 wickets in hand and it was at this juncture that Rizwan and Asif came on.
The pair took immediate control with the old ball and as the runs dried up, the rate climbed higher aided by some superb ground fielding and with that the home team fell just short despite having 6 wickets in hand.
A good competitive match played in the right spirit - just what is needed from pre-season fixtures so we can start the season well.
