Match report
TMIV v. Offley & Stopsley
28/08/2010
Played at O&S
After last weeks setback it was important for the 4s to quickly re-find their winning form. The pitch was very green and soft after all the rain in the week however the opposition skipper won the toss and chose to bat on account of his sides precarious league position and the need for points.
Siva opened the bowling with Sargent Slaughter in his final seasons outing for the 4s. Both bowled well with Jeremy especially probing away on a full length. Scoring was sedate on account of the tricky pitch but Siva made the breakthrough producing an excellent yorker to clean up one of the openers. He doubled his account within the space of two balls with something he may describe as a yorker but the rest of us call a full toss. This brought in the opposition skipper paired with the remaining opener; we had good LBW shouts against both batsman turned down but despite this scoring was still kept at a premium. Siva and Jeremy both finished their excellent spells and were replaced by Sanjay and Steve. Steve talked the obdurate opener into an injudicious sweep against an outswinger but was, shall we say, “dismayed” to see two fielders both leave the catch to each other with the ball dropping safely in-between them. Thankfully no one is named or shamed in the 4s reports which is a good thing for Siva and Rakesh. Meanwhile the opposition skipper decided to up the rate and clouted a few healthy blows over mid-wicket, he then managed to miss an innocuous straight delivery from the speed merchant Sanjay much to our relief. Steve then got his man as the opener played a loose shot across the line and managed only to hit it as far as mid-off where the catch was taken (through fear of reprisals from Steve if for no other reason). Rakesh then made amends and caught a straightforward one off of Sanjay followed by Chris producing one of the better catches the 4s have seen this season rushing in from the long-off boundary and diving to take the ball inches from the turf to give Sanjay his third wicket. This was soon followed by his fourth from a waist high full toss spliced off the bat to AB. After a period of regrouping by the opposition Steve and AB combined to great effect not for the first time this season to have number 7 superbly stumped. A change of bowling for the final few overs saw Vivek rewarded with a wicket from his first ball as the young tail ender chipped one straight to Ketan at mid-on. The number 11 looked distinctly unsure of himself edging a four whilst seeing out the remainder of Vivek’s solitary over. A quick single brought him on strike at Steve’s end and one ball later we were walking off with his stumps if not smashed out the ground, at least looking slightly forlorn. 120 all out was an excellent effort with all catches bar one taken.
Vivek and Jeremy began TMs response. The score was a relatively low one but there were rain clouds about ready to scupper this run chase. Possibly Vivek had this in mind when he began tucking into the bowling at an alarming rate, more probably from recent experience is that this is just the way he rolls. Regardless of the reasoning it was mighty effective and he smashed and crashed his way to 49 in no time at all with a massive six thrown in for good measure. On the downside he did run out Jeremy appearing to call a run but then deciding not to leave his crease, Jeremy was most displeased. An off-spinner was brought on and tempted Vivek to run past a delivery rather than smash it to the rope bringing in Rakesh to join Sanjay. Unfortunately Rakesh drove his first ball straight back to the bowler at which point the rain began for the second time although this time it was a little more welcome as the batsman needed a bit of time to calm down. We had moved the score along but last weeks collapse was still fresh in the mind and when Sanjay lost his leg stump to a full ball he was trying to turn around the corner nerves were becoming frayed. Thankfully Ketan steadied the ship with some eminently sensible batting going for the 1s and 2s that were needed. AB was doing well also but then slapped a full toss at the oppositions best fielder and departed bringing in Waqas. Ket and Waqas got is over the psychological 100 barrier and had got to Nelson when Ket tried to steal a second to a guy who had been being pinging it in over the stumps all day, his dive failed to get him close. Kamlesh went next and the score moved to 117-6 with four needed for the win when Waqas had brain-fade and was caught out going for glory, thankfully by this time his job was done. Chris went to join Kamlesh but did not have to face a ball (thankfully) as Kam calmly steered one off his pads to the square leg boundary. Cue much relief by all.
For once the rain conspired to assist the 4s as it halted the then league leaders match allowing the 4s to go back to the top of the table with one to play....
