Match report TMIV v. Old Owens
24/07/2010
Played at Rowley Lane

Losing the toss has become our 12th man this season and it was an excellent one to lose given that the Rowley Lane pitch at the ends resembled the Nubian desert yet the middle appeared to have been watered to mirror the Everglades following a particularly heavy storm. So reluctantly the opposition skipper opted to bat possibly on account of the presence of only seven of our team at ten to one on Saturday. So on one hand Siva’s tardiness was mildly irritating but on the other may well have been a masterstroke in duplicity. The opening overs were remarkably calm given that we could only afford a 3 - 2 offside field that is, if we fancied the luxury of having someone to keep wicket as well. Joe Coakley (8-0-32-0) bowled a tidy opening spell and once the Siva-mobile arrived with Posse in tow and we were up to full strength to begin playing properly. With the batsman cautiously assessing the wicket it took until about the 9th over for the breakthrough to arrive with certainly the best of Siva’s 5 that he bagged. Having essayed a few times in recent weeks how not to bowl a slower ball this time he was more than up to the job with the batsman well deceived into playing early and being bowled (think Harmison to Clarke at Edgbaston ’05, but not as good). Following this Rakesh decided to morph into Jonty and ran two people out in quick succession with direct hits the first being a classic “yes, no, maybe, ****, sorry”. Sanjay then took sharp catch at point off of a widish one from Siva plus a second bowled for him as the bat went back when forward was the order of the day (this I might add, following some sage advice about the length to bowl to the particular bat). Steve chipped in with a no-brainer of an LBW with the bat playing a totally different line to the ball followed by an unplayable one from Siva to the young bat exploding off a length into Joe Coakley’s mitts at short-midwicket (the only wicket of the day totally attributable to the pitch rather than batsman error). Things were looking pretty decent for the 4s at about 67-7. The opposition should be credited with a really good effort at rebuilding the innings as they ended up posting a reasonably challenging total from this position. The match to this point had been played in fast forward such was the flurry of wickets but the two new bats had no option but to slow things down and play without risk. Of course being a 4s game we managed to drop them a few times two chances flying low through the slips and one in and out of the keepers gloves off an under edge. They managed to move the score on here and there so Waqas (4-1-11-1) was brought on to mix things up. He justified this move by bowling their top scorer with a lovely turning off break. Visions of last weeks lower order onslaught returned as the number 10 took a six and a four off consecutive deliveries but thankfully a bit of catching sanity returned as he came up shy booming another one into the deep off of Steve (17-7-44-2). Siva “requested” to be brought back on for the last wicket to try to collect his five-for which he duly did with a piece of garbage that didn’t pitch though the overhead catch was a reasonable effort. Siva finished with an excellent (16-6-32-5) though the quality was slightly questionable!

We needed 124 on a pitch that did not invite confidence. The old 4s spirit reared its ugly head again with wickets tumbling at all too regular intervals. Kamlesh was caught off a very slow, slower ball bouncer followed by Ketan who swished at one and missed, the ball didn’t. Rakesh who was not taking notes at this point did exactly the same thing with only Sanjay bringing any sense of calm (though his sense of calm is still comes out swinging) to keep us in the match. Run rate rarely is a bother for the 4s and it wasn‘t on this occasion either, however with Joe Coakley departing for 5 and Abhilesh the third person to be clean bowled by the same bowler for 16 (by now that particular batsman union had determined the bowler in question was as cunning as Waqar in his pomp) we were in trouble. Sanjay top scored with 36 but departed a touch disappointingly caught at slip trying to smoke the slow bowler to the fence. The 4s had ended up at this juncture at about 87-6 still with 50 required. Thankfully Mani (14*) entered the fray at this stage in particularly belligerent mode. Mani operates exclusively on the offside and also manages to make legside deliveries into offside shots backing away from the stumps at any given opportunity. The next overs saw either a stern forward defensive or very occasionally an angry cut at anything wide. Very effective and combined with Waqas’ handy batting at the other end we all started to believe again. In the end it the win was achieved with little fuss by these two given the chaos that had come before with Waqas (20*) blasting one to the rope with only a single required.

A good win given the serious wobble but a much better batting effort will be required when we take on a high flying Evershot next week.
